  • Trialogue in raising good news agents

    Open Access•Kasebwe T L Kabongo•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•2025•References: 1

This article is a case study. It reflects on InnerCHANGE South Africa’s (ICSA) efforts to develop missionaries emerging from African neighbourhoods of poverty. ICSA calls those missionaries, good news agents. This reflection considers the concept of trialogue - a discerning interaction between church, culture and biblical narrative- to reflect on the ICSA leadership development approach. In the world of mission, people may be satisfied with nurtu…

  • Nurturing agency in emerging adults of local churches

    Open Access•Kasebwe T L Kabongo•ARTICLE•HTS Teologiese Studies /…•2023

Emerging adults (age 35 and below) are the majority of the African population. In South Africa, for example, emerging adults make 63.9% of its population. This age group seems to be marginalised in Christian congregations of the township of Soshanguve where this research was conducted. This research is a case study that interviewed 30 de-churched emerging adults from different denominations to make its conclusions. It is stressing how the church …

InnerCHANGE understands incarnational ministry as a mission to meaningfully identify with people its members li…

  • African-initiated churches and environmental care in Limpopo, South Africa

    Open Access•Kasebwe T L Kabongo, Juliane Stork•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 1

Climate change in South Africa is increasingly threatening the most vulnerable populations in rural areas of the country, such as the Limpopo province. Religious communities could be important actors in South Africa, and their role in sustainable development could be critical. Research on the capacities of religious communities for climate change adaptation is vital for reaching the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 13, 14 and 15. This…

  • An Africanised theological education

    Open Access•Kasebwe T L Kabongo, Luc Kabongo•ARTICLE•Stellenbosch Theological Journal•2021

The transformation of theological education in the context of Africa has motivated this research. It discusses ways an Africanised theological education could help integrate knowledge with understanding and wisdom. The article stresses the need for theology students to be given more time for practical learning. It also stresses that epistemological diversity should be adopted so that nobody’s knowledge acquisition preference is neglected. It also…

  • The fight against gender-based violence

    Open Access•Kasebwe T L Kabongo•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•2021•References: 1

The fight against gender-based violence (GBV) requires the participation of as many society stakeholders as possible, including the church. Gender-based violence has become a pandemic in South Africa. The township of Soshanguve where InnerCHANGE, a missional team, serves is just a microcosm of this alarming reality. This research uses the grounded theology methodology to design a curriculum to empower teenagers and the youth to become people of p…

  • Contextualisation

    Open Access•Kasebwe T L Kabongo•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•2021

Contextualisation is a process of seeking meaning and relevancy in a constantly changing world. It is a theological imperative if biblical values were to be relevant to everyone in the world. This research is a case study of InnerCHANGE South Africa (ICSA) efforts to be contextual. InnerCHANGE South Africa is part of an international missional order called InnerCHANGE, which was started in 1984 in the United States of America. International organ…

  • Making sense of the Covid-19 disruptions in incarnational ministry using Micah 6

    Open Access•Kasebwe T L Kabongo•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•2021•References: 2

This is a case study reflecting on the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) disruptions on InnerCHANGE South Africa (ICSA hereafter), an incarnational ministry. Incarnation ministry is understood as an intentional effort to join God in the world, especially a community of poverty, live among the residents of that community, affirm their dignity and compassionately love them. This understanding is based on the values of justice activi…

  • A missional reflection on the challenges of getting married faced by the poor

    Open Access•Kasebwe T L Kabongo•ARTICLE•HTS Teologiese Studies /…•2020

This is a case study that is written from the perspective of a black African who lives in a community of poverty. He has observed a growing number of adults who desire to get married, but only cohabit. He formed a focus group with five cohabiting couples who desired to get married. Through this focus group, they discussed impediments of getting married as well as alternatives for converting challenges to resources that would make marriage a reali…

  • Africanisation of theological education

    Open Access•Kasebwe T L Kabongo•ARTICLE•HTS Teologiese Studies /…•2020

This article explores the concept of hybrid epistemology in relation with the author’s theological teaching of his neighbours from the northern townships of Pretoria and the students of the University of Pretoria. It is written from the perspective of a black African mission practitioner who values with equal footing the diverse ways human beings can acquire knowledge. He longs to see a symbiotic relationship between different epistemologies and …

  • Christian leadership in a South African township community

    Open Access•Kasebwe T L Kabongo•ARTICLE•HTS Teologiese Studies /…•2020

The author reflects on the reality of nepotism in Christian leadership as he has observed in the township of Soshanguve and many other African poverty-stricken communities he has lived in. The leadership of churches in those areas seems to run in the family. This model tends to have a disempowering effect on the other church members in terms of taking responsibility or initiating projects that could expand the impact of the church beyond the bord…

  • A missiological approach to the involvement of the church in handling school dropouts in South Africa

    Open Access•Kasebwe T L Kabongo•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•2019•References: 1

School dropout negatively affects many children living in poor communities of South Africa. Those who drop out of school are usually blamed by people around them for leaving school. However, this article stresses that school dropout can be caused by many factors that are beyond the control of an individual who dropped out. The article is written from the perspective of a person who longs to see the church as a tangible Good News agent in society.…

  • From victimhood to hubs of (trans)formation and local agency

    Open Access•Kasebwe T L Kabongo•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•2019•References: 4

This article was written from the perspective of a black African who has been unfairly subjected to colonialism, apartheid and neo-colonialism. This African is learning to simultaneously blame others for mistakes committed against him and interrogate his own agency in being an answer to his own prayers. He has observed that communities of poverty are usually seen as undesirable. As a consequence of this, most of its residents prefer to move away,…
