  • Towards a Kairos theology

Open Access•Henco van der Westhuizen•ARTICLE•HTS Teologiese Studies /…•2025

This article proposes that the theology of Moltmann – particularly his reflections on time, eschatology and the Trinity – offers profound resources for reimagining Kairos theology in the present. Moltmann’s theology enables us to think of time not only as a moment of rupture and crises, but as promise and hope, relationality and participation, rhythm and direction, fulfilment and discernment. Time is deeply theological. Read alongside the Kairos …

  • Constructive After Systematic? On Doing Theology in South Africa Today

    Open Access•Henco van der Westhuizen•ARTICLE•Open Theology•2024

In this article, I inquire about the value and significance of the concept of Constructive Theology, more specifically, the value and significance of the concept constructive when it is related to the concept of theology. In the first part of the article, I inquire about the meaning of Constructive Theology. The story of Constructive Theology is a story of many stories. In this part, therefore, specific reference is made to one such story, as it …

  • Doing theology from below, from below

    Open Access•Henco van der Westhuizen•ARTICLE•Stellenbosch Theological Journal•2021

To address the issue of doing theology from below in South Africa, I will question how Bonhoeffer’s learning to see things from below has been interpreted from below. I will ask how John de Gruchy, who edited the new English edition of Bonhoeffer’s final fragments, interpreted him from below. In this light I will reflect on doing theology from below in South Africa

  • Nederduitse Gereformeerde Kerk, hermeneutiek en etiek? (1986–2019)

    Open Access•Henco van der Westhuizen•ARTICLE•Stellenbosch Theological Journal•2021

The Dutch Reformed Church – hermeneutics and ethics (1986-2019)?In this article I ask about the relation between hermeneutics and ethics in the Dutch Reformed Church (DRC) from 1986–2019. The article, more specifically, asks about the relation between hermeneutics and homosexuality. For the DRC, homosexuality has been the most critical ethical theme since 1986. The article’s main concern is with the reports of the Algemene Sinode (General Synod) …

  • The Spirit and salvation

    Open Access•Henco van der Westhuizen•ARTICLE•In die Skriflig/In Luce Verbi•2020

To answer the question of the relation between the Spirit and salvation, this article explores Michael Welker’s theology of the Trinity. I argue that Welker’s Trinitarian theology, with its focus on the activity of the triune God, is built on his theology of the Spirit. The Spirit, I argue, allows him to understand the salvific activity of the triune God realistically. The first three parts of the article will focus on Welker’s Trinitarian unders…

  • The Spirit and creation

This article explores the relation between the Spirit and creation, or rather the theology of the Spirit and a theology of creation, with reference to the theology of Michael Welker. The first part of this descriptive article explores what Welker refers to as a reductionist understanding of creation. The second part is an in-depth exploration of Welker’s understanding of biblical creation. In this light, the third part examines the relation betwe…

  • The Spirit and the law

    Open Access•Henco van der Westhuizen•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•2019

In this article, the relation between a theology of the Spirit and a theology of biblical law is explored. This is performed in reference to the theology of Michael Welker. In the first part of the article, it is shown how the relation between the Spirit and the law, which could be considered to be his main and most unique contribution towards a theology of the Spirit, serves as the framework for his entire theological endeavour. In the third par…
