  • Polarisation beyond the Pandemic

    Open Access•Thomas Wabel•ARTICLE•Stellenbosch Theological Journal•2025

After some initial background information on the relation of church and state in the German context, the article examines reactions by churches and other Christian groups in Germany to the Covid-19 containment measures. While representatives of mainline churches focussed on consolation in the crisis and support state measures, a minority of radical voices acted in a polarising way, offering interpretations in terms of spiritual warfare, betrayal …

  • Just housing

    Open Access•Thomas Wabel, Stephan De Beer•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•2024•References: 7

In cities worldwide, housing is precarious. Local socio-economic environments can exacerbate existing social differences and exclusions, but can also contribute to alleviate these differences, and to foster high levels of social inclusion. This article introduces a special collection of articles asking how theology should contribute theologically to address the challenges of housing and human settlements. It derives from an assertion that theolog…

  • Size and the good life

    Open Access•Thomas Wabel•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 1

Among the key figures of global housing inequality is the average living space per person. Thus, it comes as no surprise that during the past decade, tiny houses have become an attractive option for some who want to set an example in an affluent society of the global north: free-standing, two-storey building with a total floor space of less than 30 m2. At the same time, in many countries of the global south, people are confined to a similar floor…

  • Relevance of Religiosity for Coping Strategies and Disability in Patients with Fibromyalgia Syndrome

Open Access•Alexandra Braun, Dimitar Evdokimov et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Religion and Health•2022

Coping strategies are essential for the outcome of chronic pain. This study evaluated religiosity in a cohort of patients with fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS), its effect on pain and other symptoms, on coping and FMS-related disability. A total of 102 FMS patients were recruited who filled in questionnaires, a subgroup of 42 patients participated in a face-to-face interview, and data were evaluated by correlation and regression analyses. Few patients…

  • Strangers and Fellow Citizens

    Open Access•Thomas Wabel•ARTICLE•Studies in Christian Ethics•2021

The article sets out a critical assessment of recent public reactions in Germany upon taking in large numbers of refugees since 2015, which have been swaying between moralisation and resentment. In this situation, public theology should ask how hospitality is linked to the perceived identity of a society and to its perception of who belongs, and what role Christianity might play in these debates. Drawing on a phenomenological perspective within c…

Peter Bubmann, Florian Höhne et al.•BOOK•Public Theology, Religious…•2018

  • Leaving the Void Open

Thomas Wabel•ARTICLE•Journal of Church and State•2013•Cited by: 1

Among the public occasions that have a civil religious dimension to them, days of national remembrance play an important role. The way a nation's self-understanding is shaped by such events may, however, differ considerably between different countries. Although days of remembrance often bring out the legitimating and integrative function of civil religion, in the case of Germany, public remembrance is normally accompanied by a certain wariness as…

  • Die nahe ferne Kirche

    Thomas Wabel•BOOK•Die nahe ferne Kirche•2010
