  • Some more translation headaches in Romans

    Open Access•A B Du Toit•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•2010

Following on a previous article, three more problematic lexical items which occur repeatedly in Romans are discussed: [foreign font omitted] and [foreign font omitted]. Typical of the old, etymological approach, translators are often inclined to attach too much weight to the preposition [foreign font omitted] in [foreign font omitted] In Romans 8:16, for instance, it would be more appropriate to translate [foreign font omitted] in the sense of af…

  • South African discourse analysis in theory and practice

    Open Access•A B Du Toit•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•2008

Discourse analysis should not be overly ambitious, but it can be a most helpful exegetical tool if it concentrates on the argumentative flow and thematic aspects of a discourse. A refined model of South African discourse analysis is presented. The different stages in this model are discussed and illustrated by means of Philippians 3:2-11. Special attention is given to problems regarding the dividing of the text into colons

  • Forensic Metaphors in Romans and their soteriological significance

    Open Access•A B Du Toit•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•2003•References: 1

Previous studies on legal references in Paul concentrated almost exclusively on matters of civil law. A study of five important passages in Romans and an overview of the rest of Romans indicate that this letter contains an unusual number of forensic metaphors and that Paul, in Romans, packaged his soteriology within a forensic setting. This suggests that he deliberately created an implicature, inviting his readers to compare the iustitia Dei with…

  • The Kingdom of God in the Gospel of Matthew

    Open Access•A B Du Toit•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•2000

It would be entirely wrong to regard "kingdom of God" as the central motif of the New Testament. Matthew's kingdom depiction should be read against the backdrop of a (mainly) Jewish Christian community in the process of re-defining its own identity over against Jewish opposition, which was consolidating itself under Pharisaic-scribal leadership. The genitive "of God/of heaven" signifies the kingdom as God-determined, but God's transcendence is mi…

  • Joodse religieuse uitbreiding in die Nuwe-Testamentiese tydvak

    Open Access•A B Du Toit•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•1997

Jewish religious expansion in the New Testament era: Was Judaism a missionary religion? (Part II) In the first part of this article five factors were identified which would have contributed to the significant numerical increase of Jews towards the end of the Second Temple period. Here six others are discussed: Jewish slaves in non-Jewish households, adoption of children, the universalistic tendency in certain circles, the role of the synagogue, t…

    Open Access•A B Du Toit•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•1996

Jewish religious expansion in the New Testament era: Was Judaism a missionary religion? (part I) The dramatic increase in the Jewish population towards the end of the Second Temple period has prompted the theory that Judaism at that stage was an energetic missionary religion. But this phenomenon should rather be ascribed to a variety of factors. In this first article five of these factors are discussed: the Jewish attitude towards procreation, th…

  • Die funksie en waarde van agtergrondstudie van die Nuwe Testament

    Open Access•A B Du Toit•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•1995

Background study of the New Testament: its function and value To be able to understand any nonnal linguistic utterance, infonnation regarding the context within which it functions, is of decisive importance. For that reason every exegete of the New Testament has to develop a broad frame of reference regarding the Jewish and Graeco-ROInan world within which the New Testament documents originated. In spite of various obstacles, our knowledge of tha…

  • Liggaamstaal in gebed

    Open Access•A B Du Toit•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•1994

Bodily posture in prayer: A New Testament perspective The New Testament does not prescribe any specific bodily postures or gestures for praying. All three universal postures, viz that of standing, kneeling and prostration, are repeatedly mentioned in the New Testament documents without comment. Directives are, however, given on the spiritual attitudes which should influence bodily expression. In deciding on different options for today the importa…

  • Simposium tussen Nederlandse en Suid-Afrikaanse Nuwe-Testamentici

    Open Access•A B Du Toit•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•1993

Symposium between Dutch and South African New Testament scholars: report and critical evaluation A short historical survey of theological relations between Netherland and South Africa and especially of the consequences of the cultural boycott, highlights the importance of this meeting. • Analise van die opbou, argumentasiegang en pragmatiek van die Galatebrief

    Open Access•A B Du Toit•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•1990•References: 1

Analysis of the structure, argument and pragmatics of Galatians: An initial orientation Initially three methodological pitfalls regarding the analysis of the overall structure of Galatians are discussed: that of historical reconstruction of its polemical situation, of the rhetorical model and of the bipartite Pauline division between theological exposition and paraenesis. Then the macrostructural relations, the argument and the pragmatics of Gala…

  • Teologiese weerbaarheid as kerklike vereiste. Ons teologiese opleiding onder die loep

    Open Access•A B Du Toit•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•1988

Theological preparedness as ecclesiastical requirement. Our theological training Reconsidered The theological and spiritual aspects of training for the ministry belong inseparably together. Likewise theological training and endowment by the Spirit should not be seen as alternatives, but as complementing each other. In order to identify the theological requirements for the ministry eight typical functions of a minister of the Word are discussed. T…

  • Marturia in Johannes 1

    Open Access•A B Du Toit•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•1985

    Open Access•A B Du Toit•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•1981
