  • Persuasion in 1 Corinthians 1

    Open Access•A H Snyman•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•2009

In this article, 1 Corinthians 1:1 9 is analysed from a perspective that differs from the typical approach of researchers, who tend to force ancient rhetorical categories on the letter. The analysis is done in terms of what is called a grounded theoretical approach . This approach is briefly summarised, followed by a description of the rhetorical situation of the letter and a systematic analysis of these nine verses. It will be argued that these …

  • A Rhetorical analysis of Philippians 1

    Open Access•A H Snyman•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•2005

A new trend in rhetorical analysis is to reconstruct Paul’ s rhetorical strategy from the text itself, rather than applying ancient or modern rhetorical models to his letters. A proposal for such a text-centred approach, in which the focus shifts from the formal to the functional,is briefly summarised in this article, followed by a discussion of the rhetorical situation that Paul wants to address in this letter. Spiritual problems, especially int…

  • Style and the Rhetorical Situation of Romans 8.31–39

    Open Access•A H Snyman, AH Snyman•ARTICLE•New Testament Studies•1988

The long history of research on Paul's style has neglected to a large extent the question of the functions of the various stylistic techniques used in his letters. This statement, however, needs some clarification. By ‘style’ here is not meant the traditional figures of speech and figures of thought, but all the linguistic choices an author has made in the light of restrictions imposed on him by the rhetorical situation. These choices include suc…

  • Toward a New Classification of the Figures (ΣΧΗМАτА) in the Greek New Testament

Open Access•A H Snyman, AH Snyman et al.•ARTICLE•New Testament Studies•1986

A cursory view of the classification of the figures by some prominent grammarians of New Testament Greek reveals a quite confusing picture. In his monumental work A Grammar of the Greek New Testament in the light of historical research (1919), A. T. Robertson deals with certain ‘grammatical’ figures of speech in his discussion of the sentence (chapter 10, 390–445). The ‘remaining’ figures are dealt with in chapter 22 under the heading: Figures of…
