The end of the oppressive empire is at hand
The article seeks to bring the effect of the encounter with the Neo-Babylonian Empire on the oracles in Jeremiah 50–51 Masoretic text (MT) to the fore. In these oracles, the Babylonian imperial claim of global rule from Babylon as a manifestation of the kingship of Marduk is countered with the counter-imperial claim that Yahweh is king. Babylon was merely a golden cup in the hand of Yahweh. The city of Babylon, which was built by Marduk, would su…

A reflection on the identity of the club of Yahweh in Jeremiah 51:20: This article reflected on the identity of the club of Yahweh referred to in Jeremiah 51 v.20. Various solutions have been offered. These solutions generally have a decisive effect on the interpretation as well as the translation of Jeremiah 51 vv. 20–23. This article commenced with an examination of Jeremiah 51 vv. 20–23. Subsequently, the immediate context of Jeremiah 51 vv.20…
An ‘undervalued’ salvation oracle in the book of Jeremiah
The present article sets out to demonstrate that the promise of an eternal covenant in Jeremiah 50:5 plays a pivotal role in the book of Jeremiah Masoretic text (MT). In contrast to the promise of the new covenant in 31:31, this promise of an eternal covenant has received relatively little scholarly attention. A close reading of the salvation oracle in Jeremiah 50:4–5 does, however, reveal that the promise of an eternal covenant presents a distin…
Jeremiah 31
The theme of the transformation of reality is one of the unifying themes in Jeremiah 30-31. A past-future tension is notably present in 31:31-34, with the promise of a new covenant. This article considers the contrast between the new covenant pericope and the poetic doom oracles and the prose discourses in the book of Jeremiah. Since the book of Deuteronomy seemingly had a profound influence on the book of Jeremiah, Jeremiah 31:31-34 is also read…
Valse verwagtinge aan die kaak gestel
False expectations exposed: The function of traditions in Jeremiah 7:1-15 In Jeremiah 7:1-15 various traditions are employed in different ways. The expectations based on the Zion Tradition, namely that Jerusalem is inviolable because of Jahweh’s presence, are exposed to be false. This is done with reference to the Sinai Tradition, accentuating that Jahweh's saving acts are not determined by his presence in the temple, but by Juda’s loyalty to the…
