The “Barabbas Delusion” reconsidered
This article revisits the enduring theological and missional importance of the Nicene Creed, even seventeen centuries after its origin. It focuses on a recurring Christological crisis known as the “Barabbas Delusion”. Inspired by the biblical account of the crowd choosing Barabbas over Jesus (Mt 27:17), this delusion highlights the ongoing temptation within the Church to favour politically or culturally driven messianic figures instead of the cru…
Church decline
Studies on church growth and decline were done in different parts of the world. This article explores church decline that is continuing in the world’s mainline Protestant churches and is also affecting the Reformed Churches in South Africa (RCSA). The church was instituted by God and as such he directs the process of church growth. Nevertheless, the ongoing membership decline in the World Protestant Churches globally and the Reformed Churches in …
Die GKSA se ‘sendingstilstand’ na 150 jaar
The RCSA’s ‘missional standstill’ after 150 years: While the Reformed Churches in South Africa (hereafter RCSA) is looking back gratefully over the past 150 years, it is also compelled to reflect on its disparaging existence of the past 25 years. Several RCSA Synods have for some time, been paying close attention to comprehensive deputy reports on ‘falling membership numbers’. They also have made incisive decisions on, among other things, a ‘Conv…
Seeking God's shalom in South African cities through a new glocal togetherness
The objective of this article is to clearly reflect the reality of our modern world experiencing the convergence of two mighty movements meeting and flowing into each other. The first stream is the tidal wave of people migrating to the urban centres of our globalising world. The second stream is the result of a massive shift in the centre of Christianity away from its traditional rootedness in Western Christendom. The biggest challenge of our tim…
