Tradition of reform as reform of tradition
This article begins by questioning the commonly held assumption that tradition is fixed and does not change over time. Reform, which is all about introducing change and bringing newness, must be opposed to tradition. In light of recent scholarly discussion, this article suggests that tradition is a dynamic concept. As traditions undergo constant revision and amendment, the article takes a renewed look at the relationship between reform and tradit…
When and from Where did YHWH Emerge? Some Reflections on Early Yahwism in Israel and Judah
The paper addresses two crucial questions of the history of Israelite religion. Did YHWH emerge in the southern steppe and when did YHWH become the God of Judah? After discussing the available evidence for YHWH’s origin in the South, the paper tests the extra-biblical evidence for the worship of YHWH in Israel and Judah and questions his widespread importance in the tenth and early ninth centuries BCE in the mentioned territories. By presenting t…
Desert Transformations
Classical Pentateuch research mainly dealt with the books of Genesis, Exodus and Deuteronomy and it is only in recent decades that the literary and theological meanings of Moses' fourth book has been rediscovered. In this volume, Christian Frevel lets the interplay between narrative and legislative material - which is often not understood - emerge into new light, examining the texts of the Book of Numbers as inner-biblical interpretations and tra…
The Various Shapes of Moab in the Book of Numbers
This paper explores the boundaries of Moab as depicted in the book of Numbers, with particular focus on the confusing details of Numbers 21. Combining archaeological, historical and literary methods, the paper argues that two different conceptions of Moab can be discerned, and that it is the interplay between these two conceptions that have traditionally caused scholars difficulties. The cause for these two conceptions arose from the literary pro…
The Importance of the Book of Numbers in Pentateuchal Research

Torah and the Book of Numbers
This volume, based on a correspondent symposium which took place at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum in 2011, contains articles on the composition and redaction history of the Book of Numbers by authors who represent different views on how the Pentateuch developed over time.
Torah and the book of Numbers
The Documentary Hypothesis, which in the 20th century was the standard theory to explain the development of the Pentateuch, has been challenged from different angles. One important text corpus where new proposals have been brought into the debate is the Book of Numbers. The articles in this volume address the formation of the Book of Numbers from the earliest to the latest strata. They focus on topics like the source-critical placement of the tex…

Beyond monotheism? Some remarks and questions on conceptualising monotheism in Biblical Studies
In the first part of this article I outline serious objections against the concept of monotheism. I will ask whether the ambiguity and the problem discredit the concept of monotheism as inappropriate for Biblical Studies, or whether it calls for differentiation. In the argument following thereupon, the concept is found to be more useful to describe certain stages of the conceptual and linguistic development of Israelite religion. The term and con…

Welcher Medienbegriff eignet sic…
