Musik gereja bagi pelestarian alam
The urgency of environmental issues has become a widespread discussion among academics and practitioners, both nationally and internationally. Academically, various perspectives have been offered. In music studies, ecomusicology is an extra-musical breakthrough that can answer the challenges of environmental issues. Ecomusicologists strive to compose musical works that express love for nature and foster a sense of friendship towards nature and no…
Hearing God’s call one more time
Calling is a very important concept in Christianity. In the medieval era, calling was restricted to ecclesiastical work alone, a devotion to the life of contemplation. Ordinary work or physical labour was not considered qualified to be a calling. Martin Luther was the one who taught that the ordinary work of the ordinary people was also God’s calling and equally spiritual as the ecclesiastical work. However, Miroslav Volf, a Croatian theologian, …
Abraham Kuyper and natural theology
This paper explores Kuyper's approach to natural theology and general revelation. Kuyper's view of natural theology was that it is important but limited. Kuyper rejected the view that general revelation provides the foundations for special revelation as it results in the autonomy of reason. Furthermore, he rejected natural theology as rational proof or argument for the existence and nature of God. He distinguished but did not separate general and…
Common grace as theological encouragement for interreligious dialogue
The Dutch theologian-statesman Abraham Kuyper developed the doctrine of common grace in a lengthy manner. Common grace emphasises that God’s grace operates not only in a salvific way for the elect, but also in a general way for every individual. Despite sin, human beings are capable of doing beautiful, just, and wise things and are endowed with gifts and talents, due to God’s act of common grace. On that doctrinal basis, Christians are called upo…
Kuyper’s sphere sovereignty and institutional religious freedom in Indonesia
Although the Indonesian Constitution guarantees religious freedom in Indonesia, the implementation of that freedom is not without ambiguity. As the state defines what constitutes religion and categorises official and nonofficial religions, religious communities such as indigenous religious groups are struggling to obtain equal access to the public administration and to express their faith to the broader society. The ambiguity of religious freedom…
Fish in Faith
This study explores the history of one of the important symbols in the Christian tradition, namely the history of the fish symbol. This study argues that the fish symbol is one of the survival strategies for Christians to survive and contest with other groups in the socio-religious context at that time. Thus, this study formulates research questions such as how is the history of fish in the Christian tradition? How does the fish symbol become a m…
Transformasi komunitas misi
Transformation is the key to the growth of the church and mission. Transformation is a positive change toward Christ that marks believers’ life, as indicated by Paul’s exhortation in Romans 12:2. The church refers to the people who believe in Christ so they are renewed by the power of the Holy Spirit. That transformation or renewal empowers the church to function as the light of the world, as a missional community through the power of the Holy Sp…
Theological Reflection on Covid-19
This article seeks to answer the question, “Where is God in the midst of suffering?”, through reflecting on the paradigm of discipleship in Mark 9:36-37. Welcoming a child is a parabolic action done by Christ to show that the way to be the greatest is to welcome the weakest or to be the servant of all. A child is used as a paradigm due to his or her low status in the Greco-Roman society. Children had no right, seen as properties rather than perso…
