Formal and semantic lexical errors in L2 English writing: How do errors affect writing quality
Lexical errors have a significant impact on the clarity and effectiveness of written communication, and their existence may create serious communication breakdowns. The detection of these infelicities and their possible causes have the potential to illuminate the interlanguage phases of L2 English learners. Over the years, experts have attempted to categorise learner errors, employing various approaches. The current study uses Hemchua and Schmitt…
The Development of an Error-tagged Learner Corpus: Telc (Turkish-English Learner Corpus) and its Web-interface
Though rather rare and not favoured by corpus linguists due to computationally hard-to-handle problems, learner corpora consisting of spoken and written texts by students from different L1 backgrounds can benefit both researchers in the field of second language acquisition and language teachers. Growing from this need and considering corpora’s potential importance for the language teachers and learners in the Turkish context, our L2 English learn…
Roots, Heads, or Both? Categorizing Turkish Derivational Affixes
The categorization of derivational affixes has received well-deserved attention in Distributed Morphology. In addition to single-categorization views that classify derivational affixes as either roots or heads, a recent proposal argues that such units can be both roots and heads. While this categorization has been shown to explain Dutch and English data, whether it applies to different languages has not been extensively investigated. In order to …
Rap Devil versus Rap God: Impoliteness in a rap battle
Using a line-by-line analysis of the key conversational instances identified in an asynchronous rap battle between Eminem (in Killshot ) and Machine Gun Kelly (in Rap Devil ), this study investigates diss tracks as manifestations of impoliteness. As a framework for our analysis, we adopt an overlay of Spencer-Oatey’s rapport management model/principles and Culpeper’s framework of impoliteness strategies/formulae. The results show that both rapper…
A Developmental Study of the Turkish Connectives
Connectives present an interesting phenomenon; while even 3-year-olds can produce them accurately, the real mastery of understanding their meaning takes much time in language acquisition. We tested the comprehension of temporal, causal, and adversative connectives in 184 Turkish-speaking primary-school children and 20 Turkish-speaking adults. Our results demonstrated that high-achieving 5-graders show an adult-like performance. Regarding the type…
