Rapport management in Chinese and English responses to online negative reviews
This paper examines 120 Chinese and English responses to online negative reviews within the Rapport Management Framework. Both cultures frequently use positive rapport move , reflecting rapport-enhancement and rapport-maintenance orientations. This paper examines aggravated impoliteness in online restaurant reviews, with a dataset consisting of 92 negative reviews from the Chinese-based website Dazhongdianping . It first analyzes the usage and frequency of different types of aggravated impoliteness strategies. Linguistic impoliteness appears to be an important feature of online reviews. This paper examines how impoliteness is realized in English and Chinese negative reviews, and how these reviews are responded to.
