Highly dangerous!’: Women, the 1940s dysentery epidemic, and the politics of control in Eastern Nigeria
By June 1940, British colonial officials were increasingly unsettled by the surge in gastrointestinal and other bowel-related diseases across the Eastern Provinces of Nigeria. Medical reports, terse yet urgent, identified the Arochukwu district as the principal locus of contagion, a designation that quickly drew government attention as morbidity and mortality figures climbed. What first appeared as a discrete medical crisis soon revealed itself a…

Online interview of 20 participants across the region, reports from Amnesty International, the Human Rights Watch and Facebook posts provided data for the qualitative study. Castells' 'network society' enabled us to explain how y…

Youth, Football and Everyday Lived Experience in Ajegunle, Lagos
This article presents in-depth insights into how soccer is helping some of the youths in Ajegunle – Nigeria's most notorious slum – to defy the odds in their day-to-day lived experiences. Through an ethnography informed by personal and in-depth knowledge of the area, I demonstrate how football has become an important social tool for many youths in terms of social inclusion, capital, and identity formation, as well as serving as a beacon of hope f…
