The interdependence of health and grandparenting intensity: A dyadic perspective from grandparent couples in the Health and Retirement Study
These findings highlight the gendered, interdependent nature of grandparenting. Grandmothers' health plays a pivotal role in predicting both partners' caregiving involvement. Associations between grandmothers' health and caregiving involvement for both partners may reflect time-invariant, unobserved differences between couples rather than causal effects. Couple-based, health-focused approaches may better promote caregiver well-being and support s…
Beyond the Data: Establishing Relationships, Honoring Lived Experience, and Highlighting Qualitative Community Research With Military-Connected Families as an Exemplar
Qualitative research inquiry that centers vulnerable communities requires more than methodological rigor-it necessitates deep, authentic engagement with the populations involved. This paper explores strategies qualitative researchers can use to foster meaningful, ethical, and transparent relationships with participants and community partners throughout the research process. Illustrated through applied vignettes from our experience carrying out fo…
Family relationship quality and psychological and cognitive health among grandparent caregivers: The moderating role of co-residence with adult children
The present study explores how family relationship quality is associated with psychological and cognitive health among grandparents who had primary responsibility in raising their grandchildren and examines whether co-residence with adult children moderates this relationship. The study uses data from 589 grandparents who completed the Midlife Development in the United States (MIDUS) survey. Latent profile analysis (LPA) is used to identify grandp…
Intergenerational connections: Skipped generation family contact during the Covid ‐19 pandemic
This study investigates the association between the perceived impact of the COVID‐19 pandemic on skipped generation familial connections and subjective well‐being among grandchildren and grandparents across the United States. Guided by Walsh's family resilience model, this convergent mixed methods study drew on the survey responses of unrelated adolescent and young adult grandchildren ( n = 66) and grandparents ( n = 40). Correlational analyses r…
Nobody Else Could Tell Those Stories”: Exploring Recollections of Grandparental Narratives in Early Adulthood
Existing research on grandparental narratives, or family stories told by grandparents, often centers accounts relayed by youth in adjacent-generation family structures where grandparents serve auxiliary roles; less is known about narratives shared by young adults from more diverse family structures—like grandfamilies (i.e., grandparents as primary parental figures)—which may have distinctive characteristics given differences in grandparent roles.…
Predictive Utility of Four Instrumental Activities of Daily Living Assessments and Cognitive Status Changes Among Cognitively In-Tact Older Adults
Purpose To examine the factor structure and predictive utility of four instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) measures to identify cognitive status changes among older adults enrolled in the ACTIVE Trial. Major Findings Extracted factors represented IADL instruments. Baseline performance on the Everyday Problems Test (EPT) predicted 5-year MMSE scores (est. = .08, p < .001), adjusting for demographic and health covariates, baseline MMSE, …
From Supportive to Strained: A Mixed Methods Exploration of Emerging Adults’ Characterizations of Past and Present Grandparent-Grandchild Roles and Relationships
Though many emerging adults now have the opportunity to engage meaningfully with their grandparents, few studies have examined emerging adults’ perceptions of grandparent relationships and the roles taken on by grandparents and grandchildren. Informed by theories of psychosocial development, intergenerational solidarity, and sociocultural learning, this mixed methods study draws on closed- and open-ended survey items to explore emerging adults’ (…
Grandparent Caregiver Wellbeing: A Strengths-Based Approach Utilizing the Positive Emotions, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, and Accomplishment (Perma) Framework
Grandparent caregivers experience a complex web of rewards and challenges as the primary source of support for their grandchildren. Consistent with the trend towards a more positive framing of grandparent caregiving, this paper explores the grandparent caregiver experience through a strengths-based approach and makes the case for Seligman's Wellbeing Theory, or PERMA model, being used to support research, programming, and policy. A scoping review…
Feasibility and Enjoyment of Exercise Video Games in Older Adults
Introduction: Several interventions have been developed to enhance social connectedness among older adults. However, little research has demonstrated their performance in a social distancing environment. Exergames are not only beneficial to older adults' physical and cognitive health, but they also allow players to interact with each other at a distance, which can reduce loneliness and increase social connection. The aim of this pilot study was t…
Intergenerational Learning in the Family as an Informal Learning Process: A Review of the Literature
As an informal learning process, intergenerational learning in the family acts as a mechanism for the reciprocal transmission of knowledge between youth and adults. This scoping review of the literature synthesizes recent research relevant to intergenerational learning in the family between both adjacent and non-adjacent generations with the purpose of gaining a deeper understanding of how familial interactions align with three core principles of…
