To The Editor
To The Editor John F. M. McDermott To The Editor: It is gratifying that my forty-year-old essay “Technology: The Opiate of the Intellectuals” still has some currency. But it is badly characterized in Professor Cowan’s otherwise informative article.1 The central problem comes of her “McDermott was clearly a Marxist.” No, not at all then, and hardly more since! Of course, it is hard to do modern social science and escape Marx entirely. Possibly I l…
"Nasty and Brutish But Not Short [review of "Wired for War: ["Wired For War: The Robotics Revolution And Conflict In The Twenty-First Century" (Singer, P.W.; 2009)]
The author explores the relationship between war and millitary technology. The author has been our best chronicler of the hidden dimensions of the often hidden wars that now plague the U.S. and the world. His two earlier books described the expanding privatized U.S. military industry and the use of child soldiers, respectively,1 while Wired for War is an account of the latest (and prospective) "hi-tech" weapons systems, the evolution of military …

A Mass Constituency for Globalization
The modern or cadre middle class of managers, technologists, professionals, and kindred, typically university-degreed pursuits, is an important commodity-producing class in its own right, a mass, or populous social formation, and a true international class. It is also the social material bearer of globalization, its indispensable political constituency, and, ultimately, a contributor to the international impoverishment between countries and class…
Producing Labor-Power
In a contemporary developed economy, the production of labor-power is not left to the “laborer's instincts for self-preservation and of propagation,” as in Capital, but is made subject to large-scale institutional investment and control within, primarily, the educational system. Some therefore of the laborer's consumption of goods and services has no longer a “final” character but directly enters into the production of the most important producer…

Beyond the Master Letters: A Computerized Word Content Analysis of Emily Dickinson Correspondence with Samuel Bowles and Susan Gilbert
Much of the personal life of one of America's greatest poets, Emily Dickinson, remains shrouded in mystery. She was relatively unknown during her lifetime, spending most of her adult years voluntarily confined to her father's house in Amherst, Massachusetts. Following her death, almost 1,800 poems, as well as drafts of correspondence she had maintained with friends and relatives, were discovered in her room. They are the principal source material…
Psychiatric Symptoms of Hawaiian Adolescents
Psychosocial risk and protective influences in Hawaiian adolescent psychopathology
A large community sample of adolescents of a Native Hawaiian (Asian/ Pacific Islander) minority group was studied along with a small comparison group of non-Hawaiians, for the relationship between psychopathology (as measured by standard symptom scales) and (a) perceived support from family and friends, and (b) discussing problems with others. Expected gender patterns for friend support but not for family support were found. The Hawaiian boys app…

Perceptions of family values and roles among Japanese Americans: Clinical considerations
A follow-up study of intact families in Hawaii found that Japanese Americans' perceptions of family values and roles were more likely than those of European Americans to reflect a hierarchical family status with greater role differentiation and the male role as central. Additionally, Japanese Americans emphasized collective harmony, cooperation, interpersonal acceptance, and positive mutual social interactions. Clinical implications of the findin…

Cross-Cultural Differences in Parent-Child Assessment: U.S.a. and Japan
Videotaped family interactions illustrating parent-child behaviour from American and Japanese clinical samples were assessed by psychiatrists and medical students in Hawaii and Tokyo, to study the effects of culture on the evaluation of behaviour. The results suggest that cultural factors significantly influence the assessment of inter personal behaviour, particularly highly overt and culturally patterned behaviour, e.g. parent-child roles and fu…

Abortion repeal in Hawaii: An unexpected crisis in patient care
Because of psychological reactions in the nursing staff working with abortion patients, mental health consultations were requested by several hospitals in Hawaii after abortion became legal. Many of the nurses had strong emotional reactions to the abortion work. They reacted more strongly to saline abortions than to suction curettage because of the similarity to actual labor. Many of the nurses had trouble switching roles from traditional obstetr…

N THE tracing of Creole surnames in the Illinois country, one encounters two principal difficulties: uncertain orthography and the use of dit names.
