The spatial footprint of short-term rental on islands: Evidence from Cyclades, Greece
Greece is a country with numerous islands, which on the one hand have a unique landscape and, on the other hand, experience intense tourist development. The spatial planning incompetence, combined with the pressures brought about by tourism development, leads to built-up area dispersion and land use changes and conflicts. In this paper, short-term rental is examined, which, despite having a strong spatial footprint, is developing outside the fram…
Tracking 20 years of urban sprawl and policy gaps: The case of Cyclades islands, Greece
Urban sprawl represents a critical issue for island and coastal areas. In addition to the intense tourist development, the Cyclades islands also face issues related to the shortcomings and the way of implementation of spatial planning in Greece. This research endeavour seeks to offer a multitemporal quantitative depiction of the built-up area changes of the Cyclades through the utilization of remote sensing methodologies and geoinformatics tools …
The Impact of Built-Up Area Dispersion on the Cultural Heritage of the Region of the South Aegean, Greece
Cultural heritage serves as a repository of a place’s history and identity, integral to its landscape and central to all three sustainability goals. However, managing and protecting cultural heritage through regulatory planning often proves inadequate. This particularly applies to islands where infrastructure development pressures and urban sprawl lead to significant changes. This study quantifies the impact of uncontrolled built-up area dispersi…
Spatio-temporal analysis of built-up area dispersion: Evidence from South Aegean Islands
Islands are unique socio-spatial systems defined by their small size and isolation. Their landscapes, shaped by both environmental forces and human activity, are highly sensitive to transformation over time. In particular, the development pressures by various economic and demographic factors have transformed these landscapes, often resulting in urban sprawl. This growth not only affects the physical environment but also poses challenges for susta…
Cultural heritage on islands: Pressures from tourism, Airbnb and conservation challenges: evidence from Rhodes Island, Greece
Tourism has transformed Rhodes Island into a major destination, but unregulated growth threatens its cultural heritage. This study analyses the spatial relationship between short-term rentals, built-up expansion and heritage zones using GIS-based methods. Results show that over 46% of built-up areas lie outside official settlements, with 20% overlapping archaeological sites. Of 953 Airbnb listings in these zones, 64% are outside settlements. Thes…
Mining activity and island landscape issues: Evidence from Cyclades islands, Greece
This paper maps the visual impact of mining activities on terrestrial and marine landscapes of the Cyclades islands, Greece, an island complex in the Aegean Sea of particular natural and cultural heritage. In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, mining activities developed on the islands, many of which are abandoned today. Some of the remaining inactive mines and accompanying structures have been registered as monuments and part of the nationa…
Spatial Planning and the Traditional Settlements Management: Evidence from Visibility Analysis of Traditional Settlements in Cyclades, Greece
Traditional settlements constitute part of the cultural heritage and their preservation is an important priority, acknowledged in the present study as a multidisciplinary, multi-scale and complex issue. This study quantifies the visual impact of traditional settlements in Cyclades that arise from structures which are considered to create pressure on the island landscape and negative visual impact. These structures disrupt the landscape continuity…
What do you see in the landscape?’: Visibility analysis in the island landscape of Sifnos, Greece
This paper attempts to quantify the visual impact that certain infrastructures and buildings have on Sifnos island, a small island located in the southwestern Cyclades. Quantification of the visual effects is based on the viewshed analysis through GIS. The main element of the visibility computation method, as adopted here, is the identification of those infrastructures and buildings that are considered actors with a 'negative' impact on the lands…
