  • Race, Population Affinity, and Mortality Risk during the Second Plague Pandemic in Fourteenth-Century London, England

    Rebecca Redfern, N Dewitte et al.•ARTICLE•Bioarchaeology International•2023

We investigate whether hazards of death from plague and physiological stress at a fourteenth-century plague cemetery (Royal Mint, London) differed between populations using N = 49 adults whose affiliation was established using macromorphoscopic traits. Compared to a nonplague cemetery (N = 96), there was a greater proportion of people of estimated African affiliation in the plague burials. Cox proportional hazards analysis revealed higher hazards…

  • The Historiographies of Premodern Critical Race Studies and Jewish Studies

    Open Access•Dorothy Kim•ARTICLE•The Cambridge Journal of…•2022•References: 3

A Case Study of the Racial State: Jews as Internal Minority in England." This chapter and her separate book, England and the Jews: How Religion and Violence Created the First Racial State in the West, delineate how England, over 400 years, created the blueprint for an almost complete racialized state and continued to use Jewish racialization after Jewish expulsion in 1290. 1 She uses medieval England's situation as a "case study of medieval race …

  • A Cultural History of Race in the Renaissance and Early Modern Age

Kimberly Anne Coles, Dorothy Kim•EDITOR•BOOK•A Cultural History of Race in the…•2021

The past is always an interpretive act from the lens of the present. Through the lens of critical race theory, the essays collected here explore new analytical models, theoretical frameworks, and methodological approaches in attempting to reimainge the European Renaissance and early modern periods in terms of global expansion, awareness, and participation. Centering race in these periods requires that we acknolwedge the people against whom social…

In Silencing the Past: Power and the Production of History, Michel-Rolph Trouillot writes that by examining the process of history we can “discover the differential exercise of power that makes some narratives possible and silences others.” Alternative Historiographies of the Digital Humanities examines the process of history in the narrative of the digital humanities and deconstructs its history as a straight line from the beginnings of humaniti…

  • The politics of the medieval preracial” i

    Open Access•Dorothy Kim•ARTICLE•Literature Compass•2021•Cited by: 3•References: 12

For several decades, medieval scholars have argued over race's definition and its use for geographies, contexts, and group dynamics in premodern Europe. In medieval history, this discussion has been based on a non‐scholarly definition of race that never cited any work in critical race studies. Medieval history's uncritical definition of race, which is defined with a eugenicist, pre‐World War II classification and has ignored the last 60 years of …

  • Introduction to literature compass special cluster

    Open Access•Dorothy Kim•ARTICLE•Literature Compass•2019•Cited by: 3•References: 15

This introduction is an antidote to the much earlier issues on medieval race and ethnicity with vastly different stakes and research methodologies. My introduction here centers Margo Hendricks' work and call for a premodern critical race studies that “acknowledges its genealogies” and “celebrates that lineage.” One of the ways to do this is to explain how premodern race studies continues to highlight certain premodern race genealogies over others
