Stratospheric contribution to the summertime high surface ozone events over the western united states
The stratospheric influence on summertime high surface ozone ( O 3 ) events is examined using a twenty-year simulation from the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model. We find that O 3 transported from the stratosphere makes a significant contribution to the surface O 3 variability where background surface O 3 exceeds the 95 th percentile, especially over western U.S. Maximum covariance analysis is applied to O 3 anomalies paired with stratosph…

Paul Elmer More
THE ORGANIZATION OF Paul Elmer More's eleven volumes of Shelburne Essays has generally been considered loose and arbitrary.1 This looseness of arrangement is explained by fact that most of essays comprising these volumes were published separately in number of places between I898 and 1921.2 Many are products of literary journalism; some were originally lectures. The apparent arbitrary arrangement of these essays cannot be denied, and they probably…

Setting in the American Short Story of Local Color
Literary historians of the American local color movement (1865-1900), both contemporary and more recent, have offered various explanations for the rise of this peculiar phenomenon and various judgments regarding its literary significance.Although the movement was first identified nearly a century ago, there has not been, until recently, much sifting and analyzing of its literary content by serious scholars, with the single exception of Fred Lewis…

Survival of Pre-English Place Names in Jamaica
SPANISH PERIOD IN JAMAICA dates from 1494, when Colurnbus first landed and clainled the island for Ferdinand and Isabella, until 1660, when the last Spanish governor set sail from Runaway Bay (named for the event), harried out of the island by the English. The five years from 1655 to 1660 when the English were mounting their campaign of conquest and carrying it to a successful conclusion, were the only period when the two chief naming groups were…

Edward Eggleston on Dialect
HE ANNOTATIONS TO THE LIBRARY EDITION of The Hoosier School-Master, issued in I892-twenty-one years after the first edition--comprise the most obvious evidence supporting recognition of Edward Eggleston as a pioneer student of dialect. There is other evidence, however, including two unpublished fragments among the Eggleston Papers in the Collection of Regional History at Cornell. One of these fragments concerns the Hoosier dialect; the other, the…
