Exploratory factor analysis of the post-traumatic growth inventory among individuals in recovery from addiction
Background: the Post-Traumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI) is a widely used measure of psychological growth following adversity, although it has yet to be validated for use with those in recovery from substance addiction. The present study was designed to explore the latent structure, reliability, and validity of the inventory in this new population. Method: the PTGI was completed by 485 adults (71.8% female) in recovery from addiction. Exploratory F…
The relationship between co-occurring traumatic experiences and co-occurring mental health domains for veterans resident in Northern Ireland
NI veterans could be labelled as 'traumatised' due to high levels of combat/conflict exposure, yet the two combat classes seemed unrelated to membership of poorer mental health classes. UDR membership indicated that living in one's theatre of war could have mental health implications. It was concerning that 45% experienced some co-occurring mental health symptoms with 19% experiencing the poorest symptoms. Hazardous alcohol use appeared unrelated…
Lifetime trauma, mental well-being, alcohol and help-seeking; the phenomenological experience of veterans residing in Northern Ireland
Several experiential statements aligned with existing literature, including having poor mental health literacy and problem recognition, and heavily utilising social support versus formal help-seeking. Some novel findings included bouncing between extreme positive and negative environments which could be as detrimental to mental health as experiencing conflict trauma. Heavy alcohol use was just another rule soldiers followed. Positive help-seeking…
A Qualitative Systematic Review of Enablers and Barriers to HelpSeeking for Veterans that have Completely Left the Military Within the Context of Mental Health and Alcohol
The variation in the definition of a veteran, and the preference for quantitative methods, has created mixed findings regarding the process of veteran help-seeking (HS) for mental health/alcohol issues. To understand HS enablers/barriers for those having ceased military employment, a systematic review of qualitative HS literature is warranted. Six databases were searched. Data were analysed thematically. From 1,154 titles/abstracts screened, six …
A systematic review of quality of life and health‐related quality of life as outcomes in substance and behavioural addictions
Content validity of the post-traumatic growth inventory
Background: There is emerging evidence that post-traumatic growth is a relevant concept in addiction recovery. However, existing measures, such as the post-traumatic growth inventory, were designed to measure post-traumatic growth in general trauma populations. It is unclear if the post-traumatic growth inventory is suitable for individuals in recovery from substance-related addiction. The current study aimed to qualitatively assess the content v…
The Influence of Human–Animal Interactions on Mental and Physical Health during the First Covid-19 Lockdown Phase in the U.K
The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic presents an opportunity to explore the role of animals as sources of emotional and physical support during a period when most of the population is experiencing social and environmental challenges. We investigated how companion animal owners perceived the influence of human-animal interaction on their physical and mental health during the first COVID-19 lockdown phase in the U.K., and what concerns …
The Perceived Impact of The First UK Covid-19 Lockdown on Companion Animal Welfare and Behaviour
Our findings extend previous insights into perceived welfare and behaviour changes on a very limited range of species to a wider range of companion animals. Owner mental health status has a clear, albeit small, effect on companion animal welfare and behaviour
Perceptions on the role of evidence
This paper explores the competing influences which inform public health policy and describes the role that research evidence plays within the policy-making process. In particular it draws on a recent English alcohol policy case study to assess the role of evidence in informing policy and practice. Semi-structured interviews with key national, regional and local policy informants were transcribed and analysed thematically. A strong theme identifie…

Initial reliability and validity of a new measure of perceived social support for family members of problem substance users
Aims: To describe the development of a questionnaire for assessment of the perceived functional social support needs of family members who have relatives with substance-related problems. To present preliminary evidence of its reliability and validity, thus completing the set of measures required to quantitatively assess the Stress-Strain-Coping-Support (SSCS) model of addiction and the family.Design: A mixed methodological approach utilising inter…
Parental Alcohol Misuse in Complex Families
The impact of chronic parental alcohol misuse on both parenting and child welfare is being increasingly recognized, with such problems featuring in a significant proportion of families in which there are identified child-care concerns. There is a growing body of research which suggests that there are often particular difficulties in gaining access to such families, with effective engagement seen as central to appropriate intervention and to asses…
