The Europeans who first settled North America were endlessly intrigued by the indigenous people they found there; even before the colonials began to record the landscape, they drew and painted Indians. Plains Geometry: Surveying the Path from Savagery to Civilization
Separated by almost fifty years, George Catlin's Mandan Village and William Fuller's Crow Creek Agency show Plains Indians in very different physical circumstances. But the two paintings also reveal that over this interval white attitudes toward Indians had radically changed.
