Genetics of monozygotic twins reveals the impact of environmental sensitivity on psychiatric and neurodevelopmental phenotypes
Individual sensitivity to environmental exposures may be genetically influenced. This genotype-by-environment interplay implies differences in phenotypic variance across genotypes, but these variants have proven challenging to detect. Genome-wide association studies of monozygotic twin differences are conducted through family-based variance analyses, which are more robust to the systemic biases that impact population-based methods. We combined da…
The Abolitionist Imagination

Commentaries by John Stauffer, Manisha Sinha, Darryl Pinckney, and Wilfred M. McClay follow. Delbanco sees abolitionists as exempl…

Fixing the Image
Toward the beginning of Rattle and Hum (1988), a documentary-style film about the rock group U2, band members face the camera, answering questions from the director, Phil Joanou. After awkward pauses and halfhearted exchanges, the session dissolves into laughter as Joanou says I knew this would never work. It is a wonderful moment that both asserts and undermines the film's claim to be unstaged, documentary truth. From that point on, the movie mo…

In this small but elegant book, Professor Walters approaches the interpretation of antislavery from a fresh vantage point ...he asks new questions of old sources and comes up with novel and convincing interpretations . . The Erotic South: Civilization and Sexuality in American Abolitionism
AMERICAN ANTISLAVERY SENTIMENT TOOK A VERY DIFFERENT TURN AFTER 1831. Where early abolitionism accepted a gradual end to slavery, after 1831 immediate emancipation became the goal and abolitionism became a passion driving men and women into lifelong reform careers. Yet slavery was not new in 1831-it had been present for nearly two centuries. And slavery did not suddenly become evil in 1831; by abolitionist logic it had been sinful all along. Stil…
