Accelerators for improved health among adolescent mothers in South Africa
BACKGROUND: 30% of girls in Africa are mothers, facing high risk for negative health and educational outcomes. We aimed to identify services with the potential to reduce multiple simultaneous risks for adolescent mothers, described by the UN as 'development accelerators'. METHODS: Adolescent mothers (n=1044) from South Africa completed questionnaires between 2017/2019 and 2020/2023, assessing mental health, HIV risks, violence victimisation, educ…
Determinants of Antiretroviral Treatment Adherence Among Young Mothers Living with HIV
Adolescent girls living with HIV are at higher risk of poor HIV treatment outcomes than older women living with HIV. However, little is known about how age at first birth influences their adherence to antiretroviral treatment (ART). Using South African data from a cross-sectional study of 311 young mothers living with HIV (N = 311, mean age 19.7 ± 1.92 years, follow-up = 2017-2018), we examined the association between age at first birth (< 18 ver…
Identifying Adolescents at Highest Risk of ART Non-adherence, Using the World Health Organization-Endorsed HEADSS and HEADSS+ Checklists
Brief tools are necessary to identify adolescents at greatest risk for ART non-adherence. From the WHO's HEADSS/HEADSS+ adolescent wellbeing checklists, we identify constructs strongly associated with non-adherence (validated with viral load). We conducted interviews and collected clinical records from a 3-year cohort of 1046 adolescents living with HIV from 52 South African government facilities. We used least absolute shrinkage and selection op…
Screening and supporting through schools
Schools may provide an important opportunity to identify unreached adolescents living with HIV and link them into care, focusing on adolescents with poor attendance, frequent sickness, low mood and slow learning. Key school-based markers for identifying unreached adolescents living with HIV may be low attendance, frequent sickness, low mood and slow learning. Improved linkages to care for adolescents living with HIV, in particular educational sup…
Children as a zone of peace
Children as a Zone of Peace (CZOP) is a strategy that aims to provide humanitarian aid during conflict by prioritising the rights of children. This desk review considers CZOP implementation in countries across five regions of the world. The strategy is found to have achieved results both in terms of stated objectives, such as immunisation coverage and disease control, and other benefits, such as a break from violence and a sense of national purpo…
Supporting and sustaining national responses to children orphaned and made vulnerable by HIV and Aids
The growing number of children orphaned and made vulnerable by HIV and AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa presents an enormous socioeconomic and public policy challenge. Despite international commitments to increase resource allocation and scale up services and support for AIDS-affected children, families and communities, the national- and sub-national-level state responses have been inadequate. The rapid assessment, analysis and action planning (RAAAP) …
