Ecclesia coniecturalis
This article offers a new historical reading of Nicholas of Cusa’s early ecclesiology by re-situating his speculative writings of the 1440s within the crisis of late medieval conciliarism at the Council of Basel (1431–1437). Challenging the dominant narrative of a rupture between the conciliar jurist of De concordantia catholica and the speculative theologian of De docta ignorantia and De coniecturis , it argues that Cusanus’s later works constit…
Practices of Mystical Theology according to Michel de Certeau
This contribution focuses on how Michel de Certeau describes the development of mysticism in the Modern Age. In particular, using the letter about Jean-Joseph Surin’s encounter with the youth (around 1630), it is shown that for Certeau, the tension between mysticism and theology actually gains a new perspective on mystical theology. In particular, it is the theory-praxis relationship that is central to Certeau’s view of mystical theology. This is…
Doxological (Im)Purity? Nicholas of Cusa's 'Art of Praising' and Liturgical Thinking in 21st Century
It is noteworthy that the thinking of Nicholas of Cusa (1401-1464) has recurred again and again among prominent recent theologians who, critical of Modern rationality, have brought back to the fore the importance of liturgical praxis. Often, however, the mystical theology of Nicholas of Cusa had been presented during the Twentieth Century primarily as an unfinished precursor to Modern subject-philosophy in the line of Kant. In this contribution, …
Nulla Proportio in Concordantia
The main question in this article is whether there is room for a genuine Catholic political theology in a contemporary liberal society. Catholic political theology faces the dilemma that it is either opposed to the autonomy of the political sphere as it has been given shape in liberal society by its totality claim, or that it is not, and thereby loses its plausibility as it does in the case of Catholic Social Teaching. The authors of this article…
Mystik als Tat? Philosophie und Spiritualität bei Maurice Blondel
Mysticism as Act. Philosophy and Spirituality in Maurice Blondel Mysticism plays a crucial role at the background of Maurice Blondel’s ‘philosophy of action’ (1893). In the years after his main work, his interest for mysticism increases. The discussion about the role of mysticism is even the battlefield of his debate with Jacques Maritain (1882–1973), who criticizes Blondel of allowing in his philosophy a direct contact with the Divine. Maritain …
