  • A Genealogy of Inelegant Art

    Gary W Jenkins•ARTICLE•Church History and Religious…•2020

In 1567 a short Hungarian treatise employing eight woodcuts attacked the doctrine of the Trinity, using the woodcuts to show the enormity of Trinitarian doctrine through the abuses these woodcuts ostensibly represented. But the tract was far more than the woodcuts and their descriptions, but as well contained several swipes at the character of the Trinity as a uniquely Christian doctrine. This essay gives a translation of the tract along with an …

    Gary W Jenkins•ARTICLE•Holocaust Studies•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 2

This article argues that Inglourious Basterds constitutes a critique of America's response to 9/11. In adhering to oppositions that accompany representations of the Holocaust in popular culture, criticism of the film fails to account for the socio-political context from which it emerges. This article argues that any pleasure in watching Jews exert retribution against their Nazi oppressors is re-evaluated when considered in light of the abuses com…

    Gary W Jenkins, Gary Jenkins•ARTICLE•Reformation & Renaissance Review•2013

Peter Martyr Vermigli’s flight from Italy in 1542 left him divested of his Catholic religious heritage, but the same is not to be asserted for his Florentine republicanism. Vermigli has been viewed either as a republican (Bravi) or inclined to monarchism (Kingdon and Kirby) consonant with his time in England. This essay treats Vermigli’s presuppositions on what the human animal is, and what polity best suits such a creature. This essay engages Ve…

Beginning with key selections from Ignatius of Loyola's Autobiography and Spiritual Exercises , the documents collected here show how the Order grew, in its first hundred years, from a handful of companions to an international organization praised by f…

When it is said that Raphael did not eat, it must not be understood as though he did not eat at all, but that he did not eat in a human manner [.. .]when the angel answered that he uses spiritual meat and drink, that spiritual food was nothing else than an open and manifest knowledge of the true God [.. .]The same also is our meat, though not exactly the same. For angels see God manifestly, we through a mirror, and in a riddle [. ..] those who bel…
