Poverty and Prejudice: Evidence From Myanmar
Does poverty drive prejudice? We study this question in Myanmar, a deeply divided society where anti-Muslim sentiment surged during a partial democratic transition in the mid-2010s. Drawing on theories of economic competition and scapegoating, we test whether material hardship predicts exclusionary attitudes using new data from a nationally representative survey of 22,000 adults belonging to the majority Buddhist group. We find a large and consis…
Association between mental health and substance use among reproductive-age women with HIV on cervical cancer screening and viral suppression outcomes
Women with HIV (WWH) face a heightened risk of cervical cancer and sub-optimal viral suppression. Although mental health conditions and substance use are known barriers to cervical cancer screening and viral suppression among WWH, little is known about the impact of specific mental health symptoms and substance use issues in reproductive-age WWH. This cross-sectional study examined the associations among depression and anxiety symptoms, substance…
Innovating Combat Preparations during the U.S. War in Vietnam: The Genesis of Enhanced Air Force Training
The U.S. Air Force's periodic Red Flag exercises, starting in late 1975, came about as a result of evolutionary institutional changes in how the Air Force trained its pilots for war. Contrary to later perceptions, Red Flag was not the sudden creation of a few individuals in the aftermath of the U.S. air war in Vietnam. Instead, Exercise Coronet Organ, a series of seven large-scale exercises from 1969 to 1973, functioned as the progenitor of the R…
The electoral consequences of mass religious events: India's Kumbh Mela
Mass ritualized gatherings like pilgrimages are central to religious practice globally. Do they generate votes for religious parties? The events may heighten religiosity, enlarging support for parties seen as owning religious policy issues. Such parties might also co‐opt the events to organize and campaign. We evaluate the electoral impact of India's Kumbh Mela, a Hindu festival considered the world's biggest human assembly, leveraging its astrol…
Let Our Ballots Secure What Our Bullets Have Won: Union Veterans and the Making of Radical Reconstruction
After the Civil War, congressional Republicans used sweeping powers to expand and enforce civil rights for African Americans. Though the electoral benefits of African American suffrage were clear, Republicans had to overcome party divisions and racist voters. This paper argues that the war imbued Northern veterans with the belief that true victory required renewing the Union by abolishing slavery and establishing (imperfect) legal equality. This …

Stress and depression in the context of migration among Haitians in the United States
Our global communities are becoming increasingly more diverse and interwoven; thus, research that enhances our understanding of the multidimensional relationship between depression and migration among distinct ethnic groups is imperative. This study examined the relationship between migration-related stress and depression and the extent to which that relationship is modified by other factors, through the lens of the stress process model. This cro…
"Judge Lynch" in the Court of Public Opinion: Publicity and the De-legitimation of Lynching
How does violence become publicly unacceptable? I address this question in the context of lynching in the United States. Between 1880 and the 1930s, public discourse about lynching moved from open or tacit endorsement to widespread condemnation. I argue this occurred because of increasing publicity for lynchings. While locals justified nearby lynchings, publicity exposed lynching to distant, un-supportive audiences and allowed African Americans t…

Do Parties Matter for Ethnic Violence? Evidence From India
Ethnic group conflict is among the most serious threats facing young democracies. In this paper, we investigate whether the partisanship of incumbent politicians affects the incidence and severity of local ethnic violence. Using a novel application of the regression-discontinuity design, we show that as-if random victory by candidates representing India’s Congress party in close state assembly elections between 1962 and 2000 reduced HinduMuslim r…
Smoking Cessation Intervention for Female Prisoners: Addressing an Urgent Public Health Need
Objectives. We tested the efficacy of a combined pharmacologic and behavioral smoking cessation intervention among women in a state prison in the southern United States. Methods. The study design was a randomized controlled trial with a 6-month waitlist control group. The intervention was a 10-week group intervention combined with nicotine replacement therapy. Two hundred and fifty participants received the intervention, and 289 were in the contr…

Pain Disability Among Older Adults With Arthritis
Sample members with greater pain disability experienced heightened psychological distress, poorer perceptions of their overall health, more surgeries, higher unemployment, more intense disease activity, longer disease duration, and lower disease self-efficacy
A letter by Julia Margaret Cameron
In November 1996 St Andrews University Library acquired an informative fourteen-page letter written by Julia Margaret Cameron to an unidentified correspondent. This letter, which is preserved in the Department of Manuscripts (MS 38345), is devoted entirely to matters relating to Cameron's photography. It is intriguing, for instance, to learn from the letter that Cameron had taken her renowned portraits of Thomas Carlyle in George Frederic Watts's…
Adding a New Dimension to Online Learning Support: The Creation of a 3D Intranet Environment
This article gives an account of a project at the Southampton Institute to develop a virtual 3D environment hosted on the Institute's Intranet site that would act as both a teaching and learning resource for the students on the newly validated MA Interactive Production (MAiP). The project developed in response to the growing need for those working within the traditional mass media industries to be able to exploit the potential of new interactive …

Alfred Stieglitz and Ernest Bloch: Art and hypnosis
In a letter on how he came to photograph clouds, Stieglitz expressed annoyance that Waldo Frank should attribute the power of his photography to his ability to hypnotize his sitters. Stieglitz linked Frank's view with his brother-inlaw's query about why he had given up playing the piano. By some further flow of his subliminal self, hypnotism and piano-playing were associated in his mind with the SwissAmerican composer, Ernest Bloch, befriended by…
Von Stuck and photography
Just as this Stieglitz issue was going to the printer the above catalogue arrived from Munich. Imagine our surprise to discover four photographic studies for Franz von Stuck's Wounded Amazon (pp. 25, 64), taken by von Stuck in collaboration with his wife Mary around 1904 (see previous item, ‘Alfred Stieglitz's Apples’). It is possible that Stieglitz saw these photographic studies as well as the painting and drawing: after all, he was in Munich in…

William Eggleston: Treating things existentially
John Szarkowski once wrote that he heard William Eggleston say that the nominal subjects of his pictures were no more than a pretext for the making of colour photographs, but added wisely ‘I did not believe him, although I can believe that it might be an advantage to him to think so, or to pretend to think so’.1 Is Eggleston a photographer of the South, of America, or of the world? Does his subject matter matter? A permanent display of one of his…

The Picnic, an Homage to Civil Rights
We spread torn quilts and blankets, mashing the grass under us until it was hard, piled the baskets of steamed crabs by the trees in columns that hid the trunk, put our water coolers of soda pop on the edges to mark the encampment, like gypsies settling in for revelry in a forest in Rumania or pioneers blazing through the land of the Sioux, the Apache, and the Arapaho, looking guardedly over our perimeters for poachers or the curious noses of fat…
Facts for the imagination
Whenever physical facts drawn from the world are brought within the confines of a viewing frame, human desire mounts to make sense of the material within it. The photographer who deals in facts which are very commonly combined is often dismissed as conventional, even when these cliches have been reactivated by an artist who puts them to new use. In this sense, some of Winogrand's best pictures are perfectly traditional. In one cityscape of New Yo…
Talbot's broom and Swift's broomstick
In 1986 I made an attempt to interpret Talbot's famous picture, The Open Door (1844) as emblematic of Reason (the bridle of the passions), Truth (the lantern of illumination), and Spirit (the broom that sweeps the threshold clean).1 More recently, I was stimulated by Larry Schaafs account of the variants of the image to think a little further on the subject.2 The earlier version of 1841, which is without bridle or lantern and with a more worn-loo…
Clement Greenberg and Walker Evans: Transparency and transcendence
Photography is the most transparent of the art mediums devised or discovered by man. It is probably for this reason that it proves so difficult to make the photograph transcend its almost inevitable function as document and act as work of art as well. But we do have evidence that the two functions are compatible. (Clement Greenberg)1
