  • Accessory tympanic plate ossicle

Open Access•R W Mann, Sittiporn Ruengdit et al.•ARTICLE•Forensic Sciences Research•2024

The auricular cartilage, which is typically soft and flexible, can calcify or ossify because of diseases such as diabetes mellitus, trauma, radiation therapy for cancer, and more commonly from frostbite. Calcified, ossified, or hardened auricular cartilage is a rare finding in the clinical literature and appears to be absent in the physical and forensic anthropological literature. This study examines the ossified auricular cartilage and tests whe…

  • Bone pearl

    Open Access•R W Mann, Sittiporn Ruengdit•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

A 73‐year‐old Polynesian male exhibits a small, round, supernumerary bone along the radial diaphysis of the proximal phalanx of the right thumb. This accessory bone resembles a pearl in shape and color and is firmly attached via soft tissue, a ligament. A search of the literature failed to reveal any supernumerary bones attached to the radial surface of the first proximal phalanx. The presence of this supernumerary bone, although quite small and …

  • Thalassemia major in a 49-year-old Thai female

    Open Access•Nawaporn Techataweewan, R W Mann et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021•References: 45

ObjectiveWe present a clinically diagnosed case of beta thalassemia major in a deceased 49-year-old Thai female for comparison with paleopathological cases and consideration of age-related changes of anemic skeletal lesions.MethodsDry bone and radiographic descriptions of pathological changes are provided and compared to clinically documented features of thalassemia.ResultsThe limb bones in this case exhibit extreme "ballooning" (widening), corti…

  • The supracondylar process in subadult skeletal remains from Northern Italy (15th–18th century A.D)

    Open Access•Andrea Palamenghi, Ana Cinti et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 26

This paper presents five uncommon examples of the supracondylar process in subadult skeletal remains from archaeological contexts. Human skeletal remains were recovered from the Baptistery of Settimo Vittone (Italy) that date to the 15th–18th centuries. A bony process was noted at the distal end of five immature humeri. The specimens were examined morphologically, and the following measurements were taken: length of the process and distance from …

  • Osseous Frame Index calculations of the early medieval South-West Germany

Isabelle Jasch, Antje Langer et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologischer Anzeiger•2018•Cited by: 1

The proper description of former populations is one of the most difficult tasks in anthropology. Archaeological material is often limited due to fragmented and sometimes poorly preserved bone material resulting in incomplete data. Published skeletal raw data are available from the past, but much of this data is either unavailable or not used for scientific studies. The authors seek to elicit more information about prehistoric times by using this …

  • The Articulating Neural Arch

    R W Mann, Ashley E Burch et al.•ARTICLE•Forensic Anthropology•2018

The separate neural arch (spondylolysis) is a common occurrence in forensic examinations as well as in other clinical, anatomical, and osteological casework. A faceted articulating neural arch, in comparison, is a very rare developmental anomaly, differing from spondylolysis by its etiology and the presence of accessory "intermediate" joint facets resulting in three pairs of diarthrodial facets in one vertebra. The morphology and rarity of the fa…

  • Stafne's Defects in a Sample of Adult Thai Mandibles in the Khon Kaen University Osteology Collection, Thailand

    Open Access•R W Mann, Panya Tuamsuk•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2015•Cited by: 1

Examination of 311 adult dry‐bone mandibles from Thailand revealed 8 examples of Stafne's defects in the region of the submandibular salivary gland. This study revealed that some radiographic studies may under report the actual frequency of shallow or early‐stage Stafne's defects that lack sclerotic rims

  • Congenital absence of the ulna with humeroradial synostosis in a prehistoric skeleton from Moundville, Alabama

    Open Access•R W Mann, Michael D Thomas et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1998•References: 1

An archaeologically-derived example of congenital absence of the ulna and humeroradial synostosis in a prehistoric North American adult female from Moundville, Alabama is presented. That a physically deformed individual could survive to adulthood attests to her ability to physically adjust to the handicap, as well as society's acceptance, support, or at the very least its indulgence, of persons with potentially crippling deformities. © 1998 John …

  • Pressure erosion of the femoral trochlea, patella baja, and altered patellar surfaces

    Open Access•R W Mann, Charlotte A Roberts et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1991•References: 9

As knee flexion increases, so do tendofemoral and patellofemoral compression forces. Three cases of long‐standing uncorrected flexion contractures of the knees are presented that resulted in marked erosion of the femoral trochlea, patella baja, and remodeled patellar articular surfaces likely reflecting increased angles of flexion. It is probable that the deep femoral grooves are the result of adaptation under high‐level persistent contact loads …

  • An American Indian Skeleton with Clubfoot from the Cabin Burial Site (A1184), Hemphill County, Texas

    Douglas W Owsley, R W Mann•ARTICLE•Plains Anthropologist•1990•Cited by: 2•References: 1

A case of unilateral idiopathic congenital clubfoot in an adult American Indian skeleton from the Cabin Burial site is described. A knife found with the burial dates the individual to the Antelope Creek Complex or Wolf Creek Complex (A.D. 1000-1500). The severity of the foot deformity, atrophy and bowing of the corresponding tibia and fibula, and development of the right forearm and clavicle indicate that the individual used a crutch or a cane fo…

The calcaneus secundarius (CS) is a small accessory ossicle of the anterior calcaneal facet. A sample of 1,367 calcanei including early 20th century U.S. blacks and whites, XIIth Dynasty Egyptians, Islamic Period Bahrainis, and protohistoric American Indians from two states were examined to determine the frequency of this nonmetric trait. Statistical testing of the correlation of the trait with sex could only be performed on the blacks and whites…

  • Description of skeletal remains from a Black slave cemetery from Montserrat, West Indies

    Open Access•R W Mann, Lee Meadows et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Carnegie Museum•1987•Cited by: 16•References: 1

The skeletons of 17 Black slaves were excavated from an unmarked 18 th century cemetery in Montserrat, West Indies. A pharmaceutical phial found with one of the probable coffin burials bears the inscription OCT 29 1751. The date on the phial, skeletal analysis and ethnohistorical records suggest the skeletons are those of Black slaves, possibly from the nearby Bransby Plantation. Evidence of pathological conditions include enthesopathies, osteoar…

  • Demography and pathology of an urban slave population from New Orleans

    Open Access•Douglas W Owsley, C E Orser et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1987•Cited by: 28•References: 8

Twenty‐nine skeletons from the first cemetery in New Orleans provide significant new information about urban slavery in America. Dating as early as 1720 and used perhaps as late as 1810, the cemetery provided an identifiable sample of two whites, 13 blacks, one individual of possible Indian‐white ancestry, and two possibly mulatto individuals. Numerous skeletal and dental lesions were noted in the series, and historical information was used in co…
