How Fandom, Union Sentiment, and Game Knowledge Influence U.S. Sports Journalism Students’ Sympathies During a Major League Baseball Labor Dispute
This study was conducted during the 2022 Major League Baseball lockout to determine how sports journalism students’ union sentiment, baseball fandom, and baseball knowledge could predict whether they sympathized more with management or players and their perception of the players’ union. We found that sports journalism students generally lean pro-union, and their baseball fandom fell into three fandom subcategories: appreciation for athletes’ phys…
I Would Pretend to be a Dude’
When NBA 2K20 was released in 2019, it was the first time Women’s National Basketball Association players were included in the game. This study’s lead author conducted ethnographic fieldwork and 17 semi-structured interviews with American and Canadian NBA 2K players to explore how the presence or absence of female avatars influence male players’ perceptions of who plays the game, and in what ways NBA 2K serves as a platform for fostering or hinde…
“The lessons of 9/11 haven’t been learned”
This study is a content analysis of American news coverage of World Trade Center (WTC) cough syndrome, a common ailment among 9/11 survivors, published before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Before the pandemic, coverage was limited to areas geographically proximate to the attacks and embodied themes of respiratory disease descriptions, heroism and patriotism and government involvement. Pandemic-era coverage expanded to areas where survivors no…
Dope and Deny
This content analysis builds on past studies done on media coverage, rhetorical analyses, and journalistic role enactment by examining American and Russian news publications’ ( N = 422) coverage of American and Russian doping scandals between 2013 and 2016. This time frame was selected because it was the height of Lance Armstrong and Major League Baseball doping coverage in the United States and the height of Olympic track-and-field doping covera…
Four Areas of Collegiate Student-Athlete Privacy Invasion
The purpose of this article is to explain which American laws have been applied to four common types of collegiate student-athlete privacy invasions: education records, names or likenesses, surveillance, and forced disclosure of information. Examining cases specific to collegiate student athletes benefits sports journalism scholars by shedding light on how the collegiate sports landscape has been shaped by student-athlete privacy litigation. This…
American Sports Writers’ Social Media Use and Its Influence on Professionalism
American sports writers' use of social media as a newsgathering tool has influenced journalism practice, further complicating the industry's abstract definition of “professionalism.” This study builds on a pilot study published in the fall 2011 issue of Journal of Sports Media, which assessed print sports journalists' use of social media. In the current study, a survey was administered to 77 full-time print sports journalists who cover profession…
