Unstable Work Schedules and Racial Earnings Disparities Among U.S. Workers
Research demonstrates large and persistence disparities in earnings by race-ethnicity, with white and Asian families generally faring far better than black and Hispanic families. One emerging but underexplored factor that may contribute to racial earnings disparities is unstable work hours. Wage workers often face earnings consequences when volatility is frequent, involuntary, or unanticipated. Leveraging the panel design of the monthly Current P…
Housing Assistance, Poverty, and Material Hardships
This article documents the antipoverty effects of housing assistance programs and their relationships with other life circumstances. Using a novel sample of urban households, we examine how participation trajectories in housing programs (including Section 8/public housing and rent regulation) affect households’ housing deprivation, income poverty, and other forms of material hardships. Employing a propensity score matching technique, we find evid…
Work Hours Volatility and Child Poverty
Despite established links among persistent unemployment, low wages, and children's economic well-being, social scientists have yet to document how variability in work hours is linked to child poverty. Our knowledge of the safety net's heterogeneous responses to work-hour instability is also limited. This is of critical importance for scholars and policymakers. Using nationally representative data collected every 4 months, this paper examines how …
Intra-year employment instability and economic well-being among urban households
Preventing child protective services system involvement by asking families what they need
How effective are social safety net programs in reducing poverty risks? A comparative study of Taiwan and Southeast China
Using the harmonized Panel Study on Family Dynamics 2006, 2011, and 2013/14 data, this is the first study to examine poverty patterns and investigate the role of social safety nets in alleviating poverty over time in East Asia through a comparative lens, focusing on Taiwan and southeast (SE) China. We compared the extent to which public transfers alleviate poverty utilizing multilevel regression models. Our findings indicate that, firstly, the ex…
Silicon-Mediated Enhancement of Heavy Metal Tolerance in Rice at Different Growth Stages
Silicon (Si) plays important roles in alleviating heavy metal stress in rice plants. Here we investigated the physiological response of rice at different growth stages under the silicon-induced mitigation of cadmium (Cd) and zinc (Zn) toxicity. Si treatment increased the dry weight of shoots and roots and reduced the Cd and Zn concentrations in roots, stems, leaves and grains. Under the stress of exposure to Cd and Zn, photosynthetic parameters i…
