Spatially Contingent Contact
The geographies of modern families are increasingly stretched by migration and mobility, raising crucial questions for population geography about the maintenance of intergenerational bonds. This study investigates the frequency of social contact between Polish grandparents and their grandchildren (both minor and adult), explicitly analyzing how these dynamics are contingent upon spatial context. Drawing on a 2019–2020 survey of grandparents ( N =…
The Case of Pre‐24 February 2022 Ukrainian Migrants and War Refugees in Poland
This article deepens the understanding of the effects of war as an uncertain and crisis event on fertility beliefs and intentions. It addresses the less‐explored region of Central Eastern Europe and is one of the few qualitative studies in this field. Based on 24 in‐depth interviews (IDIs), we analyze the fertility beliefs and intentions of pre‐24 February 2022 migrants and war refugees from Ukraine in Poland and the impact of the Russian invasio…
I Kiss the Screen, But It Is Not the Same' - Grandparenting in Geographically Dispersed Families
Taking the perspective of grandparents living in the origin country, our article is innovative in examining a range of ties within social networks, not only transnational ones but also family ties in-country with both close-by and geographically dispersed relatives. We analyse focus group discussions with Polish grandparents whose grandchildren live in different locations. Thus, we are looking at transnational ties as part of interlocking persona…
The distortion of fertility due to migration
BACKGROUNDSeveral studies have shown that migrants from Central and Eastern Europe to Western Europe experience an increase in fertility after migration. The literature on migrants' childbearing patterns offers several explanations for this phenomenon. OBJECTIVEThis study examines the childbearing of Polish women who migrated to the Netherlands, comparing their fertility to that of non-mobile Polish women.. METHODUsing the Families of Poles in the…
I am afraid to fly there
This paper discusses the COVID-19 pandemic as a new external challenge to transnational family life that can undermine the care arrangements and intentions developed by the families of Polish migrants following the 2004 EU enlargement. The pandemic, associated lockdowns and travel restrictions raise questions about assumed transnationalism, building upon earlier concerns about taking for granted migrants' cross-national mobility. Based on focus g…
Polish migrant settlement without political integration in the United Kingdom and Ireland
Following EU enlargement in 2004, the United Kingdom and Ireland experienced large‐scale migration from Poland and other new EU states. The Poles who migrated to both jurisdictions were demographically similar and have faced similar challenges although these have begun to diverge in the context of Brexit. Previous research emphasized the intentional unpredictability of many Polish migrants who deferred decisions whether to settle or return which …
From pioneer migration to family reunification
In the article I analyse the emergence of lifestyle considerations among former labour migrants and the importance of these new preferences for their choice to settle in the new location. The paper critically engages with the theoretical framework of ‘lifestyle migration’ and discusses its applicability to labour migrants from Central-Eastern Europe settling in Mediterranean countries. I present the interplay between economic and lifestyle reason…
The direct and indirect impact of international migration on the population ageing process
The significance of mortality and fertility changes to the process of population ageing has been widely recognised in demographic research for many countries. Despite growing territorial mobility, however, the impact of international migration on changes i
Ethnomoralities of care in transnational families
Building on the distinction between the normative and the negotiable aspects of care, we argue that to understand the social phenomenon of care, we have to analyse not only the moral norms and the care arrangements, but also the intermediary level of intentions. The article presents an ethnomorality of care model combining these three levels. The article explores the case of transnational families (TNFs) of Polish post-2004 EU enlargement migrant…
