Open Access•Miloš Debnár, Wolfram Manzenreiter•ARTICLE•Global Perspectives on Japan•2026

Student mobility to Japan from highly developed countries has remarkably increased in recent years, though went largely unnoticed by international student mobility researchers. The framework of ISM and on international students in Japan is dominated by utilitarian models, while non-material aspirations have only recently gained more attention. This paper aims to fill these gaps in understanding students’ aspirations to study in Japan by analyzing…

  • Conclusion

    Open Access•Shanshan Lan, Miloš Debnár•CHAPTER•Migration, Transnational Flows,…•2025

This chapter summarizes key insights from the case studies and tries to translate them to wider debates in migration studies. We also critically reflect on the choice of themes and countries, the methods used in the book, the positionality of the authors. Finally, we discuss some possible new directions in researching migration and the transnational circulation of racial knowledge.

  • Privileged, Highly Skilled and Unproblematic? White Europeans in Japan as Migrants

    Miloš Debnár•CHAPTER•Expatriation and Migration•2022

The chapter analyses the migration patterns of contemporary white Europeans to Japan and juxtapose them with their assumed categorization or representations as expat-like migrants. The empirical evidence demonstrates how Westerns or Europeans in Japan continue to be represented as high skilled, privileged, and unproblematic expat-like migrants in the media. Such representations are in contrast with the complex patterns of European migration to Ja…

  • Comparing the racialization of Central-East European migrants in Japan and the UK

    Open Access•Špela Drnovšek Zorko, Miloš Debnár•ARTICLE•Comparative Migration Studies•2021•Cited by: 3•References: 20

The article deploys the lens of the race-migration nexus (Erel et al., Ethnic and Racial Studies 39:1339-1360, 2016) to compare the racialization of migrants in the UK and Japan. It draws on qualitative data on the experiences of Central-East European (CEE) migrants in the two countries to unpack how whiteness is constructed in relation to different histories and patterns of immigration in each national context. While CEE migrants in Japan benefi…
