Middle Eastern Diasporas and Political Communication
This edited book explores the development and reconfiguration of Middle Eastern diasporic communities in the West in the context of increased political turmoil, civil war, new authoritarianism, and severe constraints on media in the Middle East. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, incorporating political and intercultural communication, the contributors investigate the rationale for diasporic politics, as well as the role of the transnational m…
Arabiske Medier
Islam during the Time of Pandemics
In the Arab countries, restrictions on events and gatherings due to covid -19 have as elsewhere affected religious practices. Mosques and churches have been closed temporarily and religious authorities have taken part in public discussions about the meaning and way of dealing with covid -19. In this context, the article explores the interaction between state and religion by analysing the arguments used by Muslim authorities to legitimize or chall…
Children and Screen Media in Changing Arab Contexts
Tarik Sabry and Nisrine Mansour, Children and Screen Media in Changing Arab Contexts: An Ethnographic Perspective. Palgrave MacMillan, 2019, 147 pp. ISBN: 978-3-030-04320-9, ISBN: 978-3-030-04321-6 (eBook).Over the last few decades, Arab children’s use of media has been a subject of political interest in western countries due to questions of radicalization, the spread of anti-western sentiment, religio-political extremism, but also as it relates …
Egyptian imaginaries of resistance
Current politics in Egypt has revived the idea of a strong connection between the army, the Egyptian people and its leaders. This imaginary was introduced by Egyptian cinema about the time of the 1952 revolution. In the early days of national independence, the Suez crisis of 1956 in particular holds the symbols and images needed to create the set of semantics supporting this imaginary. Based on theories on national and postcolonial imaginaries, I…
Diasporic opposition mediated voices and the digital authoritarianism post the Arab Spring
Arab TV-Audiences
Today the relations between Arab audiences and Arab media are characterised by pluralism and fragmentation. More than a thousand Arab satellite TV channels alongside other new media platforms are offering all kinds of programming. Religion has also found a vital place as a topic in mainstream media or in one of the approximately 135 religious satellite channels that broadcast guidance and entertainment with an Islamic frame of reference. How do A…
The Muslim woman as a beauty queen
The aim of this article is to examine how Muslim women on Islamic satellite television channels are represented as symbols, as citizens and as religious authorities within or outside the Mosque. The article presents an analysis of a series called Malikat Jamal Iqraa (Iqraa's beauty queen). The analysis illustrates how the Islamic satellite channels offer Muslim female viewers a multitude of identities. I argue that the programme can be interprete…
