Chop! Chop!”: Progress in the Presentation of Western Visual History
Additional informationNotes on contributorsBrian W. DippieBrian W. Dippie is a professor of history at the University of Victoria
Drawn to the West
Historic western American art is best understood as myth in visual form. My essay argues that art enshrines the ideals of nineteenth-century white Americans who saw the West as a promised land. Western art's contested reputation today results from its tendency to celebrate frontier expansion as fundamental to the shaping of a distinctive national character
One West, One Myth: Transborder Continuity in Western Art
In American and Canadian literature, the notion of one West, two myths seems plausible. large W Western--formula fiction in which violence resolves a conflict between good and evil--expresses distinctly American cultural values, the argument goes, constituting a Puritan morality play. And it is also possible to argue for subtle differences in the presentation of the American and Canadian Wests even in a grimly realistic, transnational literature …
Deadliest Enemies: Law and the Making of Race Relations on and off Rosebud Reservation
Nineteenth-century commentators were given to the observation that the Indians' position in American society and law was anomalous because their tribal status as “domestic dependent nations” was contradictory. Reformers saw a panacea in the elimination of tribes, reservations, and distinct native cultures through a policy of land allotment that would facilitate rapid assimilation. This was effected with the passage into law of the General Allotme…

Catlin and His Contemporaries: The Politics of Patronage
George Catlin's paintings and the vision behind them have become part of our understanding of a lost America. We see the Indian past through Catlin's eyes, imagine a younger, fresher land in his bright hues. But he spent only a few years in what he considered Indian country. The rest of his long life--more than thirty years--was devoted largely to promoting, repainting, and selling his collection--in short, to seeking patronage.Catlin and His Con…

The Vanishing American: White Attitudes and U. S. Indian Policy
Not long after the white man stepped ashore in North America he began killing Indians and pushing those that survived farther and farther west. And what of his conscience? Well, he invented a convenient explanation: Indians are a race, doomed to extinction anyway. That belief not only persisted, writes historian Brian Dippie, but it also spread throughout American culture. Soon the vanishing appeared in science, literature, art, popular culture, …

His Visage Wild; His Form Exotick: Indian Themes and Cultural Guilt in John Barth's The Sot-Weed Factor
So writes D. H. Lawrence. His disciple, in this matter at least, Leslie A. Fiedler, adds to Lawrence's aboriginal demons specter of black power, and then restates same idea more bluntly: the Indian and Negro . . . are facts of American imagination from moment that imagination is formed, and white American is bound to them by bonds of guilt older than his national identity itself; and of those bonds he and those races are both aware. 2 We have, in…
