Does Context and Adversity Shape Sexual Behavior in Youth? Findings from Two Representative Samples of Puerto Rican Youth
Maternal childhood trauma and observed maternal care behaviors with 4-month-old infants
Many mothers exposed to childhood trauma may be resilient to negative effects on parenting behaviors, while specific experiences of childhood trauma (emotional abuse, emotional neglect, and cumulative childhood trauma) may predict less sensitive early parenting behaviors. Women's mental health in Mozambique
The frequency of CMD among women of childbearing age in our study was higher than documented rates in high-income countries and other LMIC. Additionally, we found that motherhood was not protective and that pregnancy and the postpartum period were not stages of increased risk for most disorders. This highlights the need to expand mental health services not only for perinatal women but all women of childbearing age in this and possibly similar set…
Preparing to launch the ‘Thinking Healthy Programme’ perinatal depression intervention in Urban Lima, Peru
Background. An estimated 19–25% of perinatal women in low- and middle-income countries are affected by depression which, untreated, is associated with multiple health problems for mothers and children. Nonetheless, few perinatal women have access to depression care. The Thinking Healthy Programme (THP), promoted by the World Health Organization (WHO), is an evidence-based, non-specialist delivered depression intervention that addresses this care …

The Latin American Collective Health movement sees the mental health users' movement as an opportunity for power redistribution and for autonomous participation. The present paper aims to analyze the users' movement in Argentina from a Collective Health perspective, by tracing the history of use…

Towards Clarity in Research on “Non-Cognitive” Skills
Human development and economic development are intrinsically linked. Guided by human capital theory, economists are increasingly recognizing the importance of a range of other skills – in addition to intelligence and technical skills – for economic success. Until fairly recently, years of education completed, literacy, numeracy and IQ – often used as proxies for cognitive ability – were the main measures used to assess the relationship between hu…
The expression of perinatal depression in rural Ghana
In low- and middle-income countries, perinatal depression (PND) has been associated with poor infant health outcomes, including frequency of infant diarrheal episodes, preterm delivery and low birth weight, and discontinuation or problems breastfeeding. Yet little is known about the awareness or expression of PND depression in Ghana. A total of 12 in-depth key-informant interviews were conducted with women who had experienced PND within the previ…
