Tracking progress via clinical feedback systems in treatment of substance use disorders
The findings expand the knowledge base and strengthen the qualitative foundation for longitudinal monitoring of SUDs and have implications for how feedback measures should be designed. The study also provides knowledge about the process of change and highlights patient experiences that are worth paying attention to when tracking progress in treatment of SUDs
Beyond the diagnosis of drug-resistant Tuberculosis in Norway
This study highlights the enduring impact of drug-resistant tuberculosis on patients and the significance of timely diagnosis, psychosocial support and post-treatment follow-up. The participants universally faced serious implications of the disease, including stigma and isolation. Participants who experienced delayed diagnosis, reflected on missed early intervention opportunities. We recommend further research in low endemic countries to evaluate…
Response processes for patients providing quantitative self-report data
The findings suggest that patients providing quantitative self-report data encounter conditions in the response process that challenge and influence their ability to convey meaning and accuracy. This results in responses that for many of the items reflect messages important for interpretation and follow-up, even if it does not appear from the numerical scores alone. The proposed model may be a useful tool when developing items, assessing validity…
Cytokines in Relation to Motor Activity in an Acute Psychiatric Population
Background: Deviations in motor activity are important clinical features of several psychiatric disorders in an acute state. Immune activity is associated with several psychiatric disorders and may affect motor activity. We aimed to examine the association between immune activity measured as serum levels of cytokines and deviations in motor activity, in an acute psychiatric setting. Methods: Data on motor activity and immune markers were availabl…
Pathological spirit possession as a cultural interpretation of trauma-related symptoms
The results of this study indicate that pathological spirit possession is a broad explanatory framework for various subjectively unexplainable mental and physical health problems, including but not limited to trauma-related disorders. Understanding pathological spirit possession as a subjective disease model for various mental and physical health problems may help researchers and clinicians to develop culturally sensitive treatment approaches for…

Communication Problems and Language Barriers Between Foreign Inmates and Prison Officers
This study uses communication accommodation theory to explain communication strategies used by foreign inmates towards prison officers. A qualitative method using one-to-one, semistructured interviews was used. The sample consisted of 19 inmates. Through a content analysis of the transcripts, three themes were identified: social and cultural differences, emotional and psychological burdens, and withdrawing from others. Prison officers in intercul…
Exploring the role of communication skills among natives and immigrants on their misconduct behaviour in prisons
As Norwegian society becomes increasingly multicultural and linguistically diverse and prison services continue to see larger numbers of immigrants, our knowledge about the interplay between communication and language and behavioural problems needs to be improved and addressed. The study focuses on language and communication problems associated with misconduct behaviour among immigrant and Norwegian prisoners. A cross-sectional study of immigrant…
The role of trauma and psychological distress on motivation for foreign language acquisition among refugees
As a way of facilitating a positive development with regard to adaptation, all refugees are expected to go through the foreign language training programme as soon as possible after settlement. This is seen as a way to help refugees gain a greater participation in the host society. The current study aimed at evaluating the role of trauma and psychological distress on motivation for foreign language acquisition among refugees. A total of 12 schools…
