Integrity of Qur'anic Legislations: A Critical Review of the Debate on Abrogation
Abrogation is claimed to be required to resolve alleged contradictions between legislations in the Qu'ran, the Prophet’s Sunna, or both. The opponents of abrogation find the alleged contradictions imaginary because the Qu'ran is coherent and the legislative Sunna is its perfect implementation that God endorsed. Accordingly, the Qur'anic legislations are fully consistent if their different conditions and ultimate goals are considered. Different le…
Academic Historiographic Remedies of Colonialist Images of Egypt’s Nationalist Party
This article does not attempt to outline the history of Egypt’s Nationalist Party since its foundation by Mustafa Kamil in 1907; rather, it demonstrates the colonialist nature of early British narratives, then discusses the counternarratives of contemporary Egyptian nationalist leaders, and analyzes the emergence of academic narratives from Egyptian and Western academic historians. The article argues that the image of the Nationalist Party in Wes…
Qur'an as the Only Constitutive Source of Islamic Law
In The Problem of Dealing with the Prophet’s Sunnah (originally in Arabic), Al-'Alwani proposes a comprehensive and coherent concept of Prophet Muhammad’s Sunnah based on the linguistic, Qur'anic and Prophetic usages of the term Sunnah, and argues that a prophet’s saying, action or approval is authentic if evidently rooted in the Qur'an, not only narrated in a correct, honest and accurate way. Al-'Alwani stresses the Prophet’s humanness and conte…
Manâfidu al-Muharramât ilâ Muntijâti al-Halâl: “Dirâsah Tahlîliyah fî Dhaw’i Ma’âyir Majma’ al-Fiqh al-Islâmî al-Dawlî wa al-Ma’âyir al-Mâlayziah”
This paper examines the changing process of unlawful (haram) materials into a lawful (halal) product according to both International Islamic Fiqh Academy standard and Malaysian standard. To harmonize those two halal standards on certain products, the subdiscipline of fiqh which determines lawful product standardization has put some fundamental sharia laws to clearly distinguish between halal and haram. The changing process is based on so called i…
Socialinė kritika po poststruktūralizmo: Ko galima pasimokyti iš Luhmanno, Lukácso ir Simmelio
This article examines the views of three highly distinct social theorists - Niklas Luhmann, György Lukács and Georg Simmel - on the issue of modernity and its effects in an attempt to explore not just the considerable differences but also some common ground between them. It is argued that while these thinkers taken together encompass a wide spectrum of political opinion, and also cover a spectrum between technocratic and anti-rationalist views, t…
Lukács on Uncritical Theory
The critique of bourgeois theory found in the work of the Marxist philosopher Georg Lukács is predicated on his argument that no part of capitalist society is free from the effects of a generalized reification, and primarily intellectual activity is very much included in the accusation. In these circumstances, if philosophical and scientific theories are blind to what lies beneath or beyond them, it is because their historically transcendent cons…

Localizing Islam in the West: Mazrui’s Journey from the Study of African Politics to Global Cultures
Ali Mazrui attempted to correct many misunderstandings of Islam in the West and demonstrate its closeness to and impact upon western civilization in several ways. For example, Islam is a fellow monotheistic religion, has preserved and added to the Greco-Roman legacy, preceded mercantilism and capitalism in hailing free trade and hard work, and modeled the western view of a tripartite world in the second half of the twentieth century. Mazrui's int…
Niklas Luhmannas: Stebėjimo Sistemų Ir Socialinės Kritikos Klausimu
This article on the theories of the German sociologist Niklas Luhmann starts with a discussion of the formal codes that give what he calls communication systems their boundaries and coherence. It continues with an account of how these differentiating, observing systems can be seen to operate independently of human intervention, leading to a split between active, conscious human action and impersonal communication systems operating under their own…
Veiksmas ir komunikacija niklaso luhmanno socialinėje teorijoje
This article offers a critical introduction to some of the most striking features of Niklas Luhmann's social theory. It opens with a discussion of Luhmann's departure from older forms of functionalism (above all the ideas of Parsons), and of how his work marks a distinct break with essentialism, foundationalism and humanism. This is followed by an account of the importance to his theory of free-form social structures that can reproduce themselves…
Simmelis apie socialinių formų autonomiškumą
This article argues that Simmel's theories about modern society and culture provide important insights into the issue of the autonomy of the systems that we live under. It begins with a discussion of his ideas about a sense of unity between the self and the external world. It continues by examining the process by which such a sense alters as life fragments into the autonomous formal systems associated with modernity. This leads into an analysis o…
Challenging Authoritarianism, Colonialism, and Disunity: The Islamic Political Reform Movements of al-Afghani and Rida
This paper focuses on the dilemmas that al-Afghani and Rida encountered while advocating and working for political reform: Whenever they fought the tyranny of Muslim rulers, they were targeted, and usually defeated, by colonial powers. And once they began to struggle against colonialism and call for Muslim unity, they were victimized and had their plans aborted by authoritarian Muslim rulers. This was a lesson for later Islamic political movement…
