  • Historical Child Sexual Abuse Investigations

Michael Newbury•ARTICLE•Current Issues in Criminal Justice•2014

Historical child sexual abuse investigations typically present with degraded evidence, which hinders successful prosecutions. However, the poor state of evidence in these cases is not merely a function of the passage of time, but also the result of unnecessary complexity and restrictions on investigative procedures. This is particularly true of the investigative procedures around police obtaining admissions and confessions. Admissions and confess…

    Open Access•Michael J Allen, Michael Morris et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Prehistoric…•1995•Cited by: 5•References: 28

The analysis of Bronze Age barrow sites excavated as long ago as 25 years can provide information on more significant and wide ranging topics than basic funerary rites. At Buckskin no primary burial rite was recorded nor any high status artefacts found. The analysis, of stored soil samples and animal bones however, produced evidence for ceremonial activity and feasting prior to the construction of the barrow mound. This encourages discussion on b…

  • Healthful Employment

    Open Access•Michael Newbury•ARTICLE•American Quarterly•1995•Cited by: 1

I long to get into the country; for my health, latterly, is not quite what it has been, for many years past. I should not long stand such a life of bodily inactivity and mental exertion as I have led for the last few months. An hour or two of daily labor in a garden, and a daily ramble in country air or on the seashore, would keep all right. Do not allude to this matter in your letters to me; as my wife already sermonizes me quite sufficiently on…

  • Ebutumwa Bw'Emiogo

M Catharine Newbury, Michael Newbury•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of African…•1984

On 28 April 1982 more than a hundred women converged on the administrative offices of Buloho Collectivity. Their demonstration was peaceful. But the women were angry, united in opposition to taxes being levied on the cassava and peanuts they transport to sell at market., They wished to present their grievances to the Chief of the Collectivity. If he refused to abolish the taxes, they planned to appeal to outside authorities

  • Dead and Buried or Just Underground? The Privatization of the State in Zaire

M Catharine Newbury, Michael Newbury•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of African…•1984

If the current situation in Zaire is as disastrous as described by the contributors to this round table1 (and I tend to agree that it is), then why and how does the state manage to survive? Crawford Young points out that deterioration in competence and probity in the state have led to its loss of credibility in the eyes of most, if not all, Zairians. And yet one of the roles the state does continue to perform (as Young recognizes) is to serve as …

    M Catharine Newbury, Michael Newbury•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of African…•1980•References: 2

  • Ethnicity in Rwanda

    Open Access•M Catharine Newbury, Michael Newbury•ARTICLE•Africa•1978•Cited by: 18•References: 5

Opening ParagraphThe nature of ethnic interaction has been at the heart of a longstanding debate on the characteristics of Rwanda's precolonial political system. Until recently, the historical referents for such discussion, and in particular the origins of the Rwandan state and its social institutions have been seen as far too remote to base conclusions on empirical data. Consequently the debate has tended to be formulated in terms of logical con…
