Portingale to Portugee
Still employed derisively, particularly in certain locales and in specific situations, the variously spelled term "portagee" has a long history. Beginning with a relatively naïve confusion over the English pronunciation and spelling of the singular and plural forms of "português" and "portugueses," the word "Portuguese" turned (by a sort of back-formation) into "Portugee." Significantly, the term "portagee" seems not to have started out as a deri…

"Roxana Lewis Dabney and "Os Fidalgos da Casa Mourisca
This essay investigates the projection of Júlio Dinis' novel Os Fidalgos da Casa Mourisca through the critical reviews of Dabney's translation that appeared in U.S. newspapers in 1891 and 1892. Despite the positive evaluation the translated novel received, and the reputation it established for future publications of Portuguese novels in translation in the United States, the novel was soon to be almost completely forgotten, along with the notewort…

Camões and the English
World War I
Written in the midst of World War I, the over-psychologized poem “O Menino da sua mãe” ("His Mother’s Child") can be best read as Fernando Pessoa’s most efficient antiwar poem. Among its antecedents is the antimilitary poetry of the English poet A. E. Housman, whose A Shropshire Lad, though first published in 1896, achieved its first great dissemination and popularity during the Anglo-Boer War (1899–1902), an event that took place during Pessoa’s…
Leonard Bacon's Camões
The American poet Leonard Bacon (1887-1954) spent more than "five years of monomania" in research for an edition of Os Lusíadas in English translation. Published in 1950 by the Hispanic Society of America (and still in print), his version remains the only American translation of the Portuguese epic to date. Bacon also gave lectures on the subject of Camões at Harvard in 1947 and Berkeley in 1951, reviewed J.D.M. Ford's 1946 edition of Os Lusíadas…

First, it provides a selection of assessments and commentaries in English by critics and translators beginning with Edgar Prestage in 1893 and ending with Ana Maria Almeida Martins in 2003. Secondly, it offers a comprehensive list of translations of Antero's work (mainly poetry) into English

Atlantic Poets
Fernando Pessoa (1888-1935) is widely regarded as Portugal's greatest poet, but in this groundbreaking new study, Irene Ramalho Santos places him in a transatlantic literary context, revealing the rich interconnections between his work and that of Anglo-American modernists ranging from Whitman to Crane and Rich. In the process, she reveals Pessoa himself to be a major figure of the modernist--and transatlantic--tradition. Pessoa's own poetry, lit…

Truckers' Language in Rhode Island
IN RECENT YEARS, American Speech has published three studies of the language of truck drivers in the United States. Here is a fourth. Unlike the prior studies, however, this one is limited to the terms used by truck drivers in a single state--Rhode Island. Moreover, I have included in this list a few pertinent office and management terms covering shipments, billing, and loads. All such terms are, of course, well known to the truck drivers themsel…

Histoire de Montferrand
U NLIKE the Bunyan legends, the origin of which has not yet been satisfactorily determined, the basis for the legend of Joe Mufraw, Bunyan's sometime cook and occasional opponent, can be clearly traced to its origin in Quebec Province in the middle of the nineteenth century. That Joe Montferrand's appearance in New England, Minnesota, and Michigan coincided in turn with the waves of French-Canadian immigration to the United States more than sugge…
