    Open Access•Theodore G Shepherd, Edith Boyd et al.•ARTICLE•Climatic Change•2018

As climate change research becomes increasingly applied, the need for actionable information is growing rapidly. A key aspect of this requirement is the representation of uncertainties. The conventional approach to representing uncertainty in physical aspects of climate change is probabilistic, based on ensembles of climate model simulations. In the face of deep uncertainties, the known limitations of this approach are becoming increasingly appar…

  • Changes in precipitation with climate change

    Kevin E Trenberth, KE Trenberth•ARTICLE•Climate Research•2011

There is a direct influence of global warming on precipitation. Increased heating leads to greater evaporation and thus surface drying, thereby increasing the intensity and duration of drought. However, the water holding capacity of air increases by about 7% per 1C warming, which leads to increased water vapor in the atmosphere. Hence, storms, whether individual thunderstorms, extratropical rain or snow storms, or tropical cyclones, supplied with…

  • Attribution of climate variations and trends to human influences and natural variability

    Open Access•Kevin E Trenberth•ARTICLE•Wiley Interdisciplinary Reviews…•2011•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 3

Past attribution studies of climate change have assumed a null hypothesis of no role of human activities. The challenge, then, is to prove that there is an anthropogenic component. I argue that because global warming is “unequivocal” and ‘very likely’ caused by human activities, the reverse should now be the case. The task, then, could be to prove there is no anthropogenic component to a particular observed change in climate, although a more usef…

  • The ERA‐40 re‐analysis

    Open Access•S M Uppala, S Uppala et al.•ARTICLE•Quarterly Journal of the Royal…•2005

ERA‐40 is a re‐analysis of meteorological observations from September 1957 to August 2002 produced by the European Centre for Medium‐Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) in collaboration with many institutions. The observing system changed considerably over this re‐analysis period, with assimilable data provided by a succession of satellite‐borne instruments from the 1970s onwards, supplemented by increasing numbers of observations from aircraft, ocea…

  • A Global Dataset of Palmer Drought Severity Index for 1870–2002

Aiguo Dai, Kevin E Trenberth et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Hydrometeorology•2004

A monthly dataset of Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI) from 1870 to 2002 is derived using historical precipitation and temperature data for global land areas on a 2.5° grid. Over Illinois, Mongolia, and parts of China and the former Soviet Union, where soil moisture data are available, the PDSI is significantly correlated (r = 0.5 to 0.7) with observed soil moisture content within the top 1-m depth during warm-season months. The strongest corr…

  • The Changing Character of Precipitation

Kevin E Trenberth, Aiguo Dai et al.•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the American…•2003

From a societal, weather, and climate perspective, precipitation intensity, duration, frequency, and phase are as much of concern as total amounts, as these factors determine the disposition of precipitation once it hits the ground and how much runs off. At the extremes of precipitation incidence are the events that give rise to floods and droughts, whose changes in occurrence and severity have an enormous impact on the environment and society. H…

  • Modern Global Climate Change

    Open Access•Thomas R Karl, Kevin E Trenberth•ARTICLE•Science•2003

Modern climate change is dominated by human influences, which are now large enough to exceed the bounds of natural variability. The main source of global climate change is human-induced changes in atmospheric composition. These perturbations primarily result from emissions associated with energy use, but on local and regional scales, urbanization and land use changes are also important. Although there has been progress in monitoring and understan…
