The Banality of Border Deaths: Unpacking and Disrupting European Apathy
Every year, thousands of border crossers die while seeking safety and freedom in Europe. Why do Europeans fail to grieve or protest these recurring deaths at their doorstep? While media neglect and compassion fatigue are often evoked, we challenge these explanations and instead foreground racialised, colonial, and abstract depictions of non-European migrants. We argue that border deaths are framed in ways that constrain responses by erasing polit…

Dyrt, men dyrebare: Ukrainske flyktningdyr og biopolitikk i bevegelse
Oppressive Language and Humanitarian Complicity: Reflections on Gaza and European Border Violence
This paper critically examines the uses and limitations of humanitarian language in addressing the ongoing atrocities and right violations in Gaza and the European borderlands. Drawing on Toni Morrison's notion of ‘oppressive language’, it demonstrates how humanitarian frames and terminology limit our understanding and action by erasing power and history, misrecognising the political agency and rights of Palestinians and refugees, and diverting a…

Introduction: Naming the Unfathomable
In reflecting on what anthropologists can contribute to public education about the genocide in Gaza, the co-editors of this special issue recognize the limitations of our tools (facts, words, narratives), audiences (students and teachers of a humanities discipline), and impacts. But, along with the contributors to this issue, we assert the importance of continuing our efforts to witness and denounce, to analyze and explain, to encourage boycott a…
Introduction to the special issue: War and fun: exploring the plurality of experiences and emotional articulations of warfare and soldiering
In this text, we introduce the Special Issue 'War and Fun: Exploring the Plurality of Experiences and Emotional Articulations of Warfare and Soldiering' by highlighting the need to challenge, expand, and reorient public and scholarly debates in order to address the complex interplay of emotions, moralities and agency that characterise the human experience of war from the perspective of those who fight
Playing war’: Norwegian soldiers’ experiences of fun and responsibility in Afghanistan
This article discusses Norwegian soldiers' experiences of fun in Afghanistan and probes the meaning of this experience and its condition of possibility. Challenging Western moralities of war, it shows that 'fun in war' can be experienced and represented as ordinary and commonsensical, but also ephemeral and immature. Moving beyond normative and functionalist approaches, it specifically highlights the importance of context, temporality, and soldie…
From asylum seekers to kin: The making and effects of kinship between Norwegian citizens and migrants
Citizen humanitarianism in Europe has been contrasted and compared to professional aid through attributes like cultivating affectionate and intimate relationships with migrants. Bringing this literature into conversation with anthropological theory, this article explores the building of kinship between Norwegian citizens and asylum seekers from the Middle East. Drawing on long-term fieldwork, digital observations, and interviews with Norwegian ci…
On the Right Side of History: How Memories of World War Two Nourish Subversive Humanitarianism
Studies on citizen-led support for migrants in Europe have paid increased attention to history and temporality. This article analyses Norwegian citizen humanitarians as agents of history who use the past to intervene in the present and extend themselves into the future. The analysis relies on long-term fieldwork, interviews and digital observations of 'citizen humanitarians' involved in informal aid and solidarity practices with illegalised migra…
Forum: The Self-Realising Soldier: Post-Heroic Reflections from Norwegian Afghanistan Veterans by Heidi Mogstad
In western media and politics, Afghanistan is usually depicted as a place of scarcity and hardship. This article attends to a different western representation of the country, that is, Afghanistan, as a site of self-fulfilment and growth. In doing so, I outline a mode of soldiering that emerged from my ethnographic interviews with Norwegian Afghanistan veterans: the self-realising soldier seeking combat, adventure and personal development in a dis…
