  • Key indicators of Arctic climate change

Open Access•Jason E Box, William Colgan et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2019

Key observational indicators of climate change in the Arctic, most spanning a 47 year period demonstrate fundamental changes among nine key elements of the Arctic system. We find that, coherent with increasing air temperature, there is an intensification of the hydrological cycle, evident from increases in humidity, precipitation, river discharge, glacier equilibrium line altitude and land ice wastage. Downward trends continue in sea ice thicknes…

  • Global sea-level contribution from Arctic land ice

Open Access•Jason E Box, William Colgan et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2018

The Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Program (AMAP 2017) report identifies the Arctic as the largest regional source of land ice to global sea-level rise in the 2003-2014 period. Yet, this contextualization ignores the longer perspective from in situ records of glacier mass balance. Here, using 17 (>55 N latitude) glacier and ice cap mass balance series in the 1971-2017 period, we develop a semi-empirical estimate of annual sea-level contribution…

  • An integrated index of recent pan-Arctic climate change

Open Access•James E Overland, Muyin Wang et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2018

We investigate climatic changes that have occurred in the Arctic over the period 1982–2017 through examination of ten observational cryospheric time series, and develop a new quantitative composite Arctic climate change index (ACCI). Using Factor Analysis highlights joint trends of winter temperature increases and sea ice loss, tundra shifts, and secondarily summer sea ice loss, spring snow loss, and Greenland land ice loss. An Arctic-wide atmosp…

  • The role of albedo and accumulation in the 2010 melting record in Greenland

Open Access•Marco Tedesco, Xavier Fettweis et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2011

Analyses of remote sensing data, surface observations and output from a regional atmosphere model point to new records in 2010 for surface melt and albedo, runoff, the number of days when bare ice is exposed and surface mass balance of the Greenland ice sheet, especially over its west and southwest regions. Early melt onset in spring, triggered by above-normal near-surface air temperatures, contributed to accelerated snowpack metamorphism and pre…

  • Application of a midge-based inference model for air temperature reveals evidence of late-20th century warming in sub-alpine lakes in the central Great Basin, United States

    Open Access•David F Porinchu, Scott Reinemann et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2010

  • A multi-proxy paleolimnological reconstruction of Holocene climate conditions in the Great Basin, United States

    Open Access•Scott A Reinemann, Scott Reinemann et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2009

A sediment core spanning ∼ 7000 cal yr BP recovered from Stella Lake, a small sub-alpine lake located in Great Basin National Park, Nevada, was analyzed for subfossil chironomids (non-biting midges), diatoms, and organic content (estimated by loss-on-ignition (LOI)). Subfossil chironomid analysis indicates that Stella Lake was characterized by a warm, middle Holocene, followed by a cool “Neoglacial” period, with the last two millennia characteriz…
