Geographical accessibility of cancer hospital using geospatial technology in Bagmati province, Nepal
Background: Ensuring convenient access to cancer screening, diagnosis, and treatment is essential for mitigating and preventing the disease. Geographical accessibility plays a crucial role in cancer mitigation and healthcare planning, particularly in low-income countries such as Nepal. A spatial perspective is crucial for improving cancer mitigation planning and evidence-based policy formulation. This study examined the spatial accessibility and …
Lung cancer risk and its potential association with PM2.5 in Bagmati province, Nepal—A spatiotemporal study from 2012 to 2021
Background Despite examining the role of an association between particulate matter and lung cancer in low-income countries, studies on the association between long-term exposure to particulate matter and lung cancer risk are still contradictory. This study investigates the spatiotemporal distribution patterns of lung cancer incidence and potential association with particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) in Bagmati province, Nepal. Methods We performed a spa…
Impact of Environmental Exposure on Chronic Diseases in China and Assessment of Population Health Vulnerability
Although numerous epidemiological studies have demonstrated a relationship between environmental factors and chronic diseases, there is a lack of comprehensive population health vulnerability assessment studies from the perspective of environmental exposure, population sensitivity and adaptation on a regional scale. To address this gap, this study focused on six high-mortality chronic diseases in China and constructed an exposure–sensitivity–adap…
Fine-Scale Space-Time Cluster Detection of Covid-19 in Mainland China Using Retrospective Analysis
Exploring spatio-temporal patterns of disease incidence can help to identify areas of significantly elevated or decreased risk, providing potential etiologic clues. The study uses the retrospective analysis of space-time scan statistic to detect the clusters of COVID-19 in mainland China with a different maximum clustering radius at the family-level based on case dates of onset. The results show that the detected clusters vary with the clustering…
Comparing Regional Distribution Equity among Doctors in China before and after the 2009 Medical Reform Policy
The fairness among the regional distribution of doctors in Category 1 is now at a high level and is better than that before the reforms. While the fairness in Category 2 is worse than that before the reforms, it causes moderate inequality and is continually decreasing. Overall unfairness was found to be derived from the between-group
Mapping Environmental Suitability of Scrub Typhus in Nepal Using MaxEnt and Random Forest Models
Being a globally emerging mite-borne zoonotic disease, scrub typhus is a serious public health concern in Nepal. Mapping environmental suitability and quantifying the human population under risk of the disease is important for prevention and control efforts. In this study, we model and map the environmental suitability of scrub typhus using the ecological niche approach, machine learning modeling techniques, and report locations of scrub typhus a…
Present and Future of Dengue Fever in Nepal
Both the number of cases of dengue fever and the areas of outbreaks within Nepal have increased significantly in recent years. Further expansion and range shift is expected in the future due to global climate change and other associated factors. However, due to limited spatially-explicit research in Nepal, there is poor understanding about the present spatial distribution patterns of dengue risk areas and the potential range shift due to future c…
Ecological Niche Modeling of Risk Factors for H7N9 Human Infection in China
China was attacked by a serious influenza A (H7N9) virus in 2013. The first human infection case was confirmed in Shanghai City and soon spread across most of eastern China. Using the methods of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and ecological niche modeling (ENM), this research quantitatively analyzed the relationships between the H7N9 occurrence and the main environmental factors, including meteorological variables, human population density,…
Spatiotemporal analysis of dengue fever in Nepal from 2010 to 2014
This study assessed and mapped for the first time the spatiotemporal pattern of dengue fever in Nepal. Two districts namely Chitwan and Jhapa were found highly affected by dengue fever. The current study also demonstrated the importance of geospatial approach in epidemiological research. The initial result on dengue patterns and risk of this study may assist institutions and policy makers to develop better preventive strategies
Identifying Environmental Risk Factors of Cholera in a Coastal Area with Geospatial Technologies
Satellites contribute significantly to environmental quality and public health. Environmental factors are important indicators for the prediction of disease outbreaks. This study reveals the environmental factors associated with cholera in Zhejiang, a coastal province of China, using both Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographic information System (GIS). The analysis validated the correlation between the indirect satellite measurements of sea surface t…
Recent change of vegetation growth trend in China
Using satellite-derived normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) data, several previous studies have indicated that vegetation growth significantly increased in most areas of China during the period 1982–99. In this letter, we extended the study period to 2010. We found that at the national scale the growing season (April–October) NDVI significantly increased by 0.0007 yr −1 from 1982 to 2010, but the increasing trend in NDVI over the last d…
