No Hope for Heaven, No Fear of Hell: The Stafford-Townsend Feud of Colorado County, 1871–1911. The Texas Local Series. By James C. Kearney, Bill Stein, and James Smallwood
This book’s main title is taken from the headstone of a former Columbus, Texas, city marshal—obviously an atheist—who checked on his stone, got a shave, put on a new suit, and chloroformed himself. But what this zany epitaph has to do with the feud described in the book is mysterious, the featured mode of violent death being homicide, not suicide. The feud in question dates to 1871 when a Townsend was killed by a posse seeking his arrest. The fam…
Evident Bias in Thomas J. Kehoe and E. James Kehoe, “Crimes Committed by U.S. Soldiers in Europe, 1945–1946”
The horrifying record of rape by Soviet troops in postwar Germany has long been a matter of record. What is new is the argument that the behavior of American GIs in the European Theater of Operations was little better than that of the Russians. Inspired by a new study alleging that some 190,000 German girls and women were raped by U.S. servicemen, the Kehoes maintain that official military statistics from 1945-46 confirm such high levels of sexua…

Quantifying the Wild West: The Problematic Statistics of Frontier Violence
Was frontier violence as pervasive as traditionally depicted? Historians are divided. Although FBI-type homicide rates support the high-violence school, a “small-numbers fallacy” continues to bedevil proponents. Consolidating venues offers promise, confidence intervals do not. Some scholarly consensus might help wrest the portrayal of western lethality from those with much imagination but limited grounding in history.
The Circle Dot Cowboys at Dodge City: History and Imagination in Andy Adams's the Log of a Cowboy
Andy Adams's famous 1903 novel, The Log of a Cowboy, includes a chapter set in Dodge City that is an especially interesting example of the mixed fact and fancy that has traditionally characterized western fiction. Remarkably, Adams appears to provide otherwise missing information on Dodge's 1882 experiment in “reform law-enforcement.”

Bright, Radical Star: Black Freedom and White Supremacy on the Hawkeye Frontier
Bright Radical Star traces the evolution of frontier Iowa from arguably the most racist free state in the ante-bellum Union to one of its most outspokenly egalitarian, linking these mid-westeners' extraordinary collective behaviour with the psychology and sociology of race relations. Personalities from a variety of political cultures - Yankees and New Yorkers, Pennsylvanians and Ohioans, Southerners from Virginia and Maryland and North Carolina, …
Prairie Populism: The Fate of Agrarian Radicalism in Kansas, Nebraska, and Iowa, 1880-1892
The Plains states in the late 1800s flung open their political doors to the Populist party while their fellow midwestern neighbors to the east left it standing on the porch. Why the contrasting receptions? Traditionally the disparity has been attributed solely to economic differences. A superficially logical answer, says Jeffrey Ostler, but too simple. Ostler contends that the distinction historians have made between hardship on the Plains and pr…
The New History of Race Relations
Political history, some say, is dead. Concerned only with the petty squabbles of rich white men, irrelevant to the real lives of the deprived or less favored, the territory of messy compromise, not lofty ideas, electoral and legislative politics, in this view, is unworthy of much attention. The methods of the political historians of the 1960s and 1970s-the formulation of clear hypotheses informed by explicit social scientific theories and their t…

Ecological Regression Estimates: Alchemist’s Gold
Those skeptical of ecological regression in voting behavior studies continue to suggest that problems in applying the technique severely limit its utility. But the cautionary offered in the Winter 1985 number of this journal by William H. Flanigan and Nancy H. Zingale (“Alchemist’s Gold: Inferring Individual Relationships from Aggregate Data,” Social Science History 9: 71-91) goes so far as to suggest that these problems are insurmountable—or vir…

Through the investigation of election returns in the Iowa referendum of 1868, the authors attempt to identify segments of the population that supported or opposed an extension of Negro civil rights as …
