  • Atmospheric patterns drive marine heatwaves in the North Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea during summer 2023

    Open Access•Lorine Behr, E Xoplaki et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2025

The year 2023 experienced record-breaking marine heatwaves (MHWs) across the North Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea, contributing to the highest global surface air and sea surface temperatures (SSTs) on record. These events were exceptional in intensity, persistence, and spatial extent, reflecting the combined influence of anthropogenic warming, short-term climate modes and complex atmosphere-ocean interactions. This study investigates the large-sc…

  • Declining winter heat loss threatens continuing ocean convection at a Mediterranean dense water formation site

    Open Access•Simon A Josey, Katrin Schröeder•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2022

A major change in winter sea surface heat loss between two key Mediterranean dense water formation sites, the North–West Mediterranean (NWMed) and the Aegean Sea, since 1950 is revealed using atmospheric reanalyses. The NWMed heat loss has weakened considerably (from −154 Wm −2 in 1951–1985 to −137 Wm −2 in 1986–2020) primarily because of reduced latent heat flux. This long-term weakening threatens continued dense water formation, and we show by …

  • Increasing tropical cyclone intensity and potential intensity in the subtropical Atlantic around Bermuda from an ocean heat content perspective 1955–2019

Open Access•Samantha Hallam, Mark Guishard et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2021

We investigate tropical cyclone (TC) activity and intensity within a 100 km radius of Bermuda between 1955 and 2019. The results show a more easterly genesis over time and significant increasing trends in TC intensity (maximum wind speed (Vmax)) with a decadal Vmax median value increase of 30 kts from 33 to 63 kts ( r = 0.94, p = 0.02), together with significant increasing August, September, October sea surface temperature (SST) of 1.1 °C (0.17 °…

Open Access•Jan D Zika, Nikolaos Skliris et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2018

  • Drivers of exceptionally cold North Atlantic Ocean temperatures and their link to the 2015 European heat wave

    Open Access•Aurélie Duchez, Eleanor Frajka‐Williams et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2016

The North Atlantic and Europe experienced two extreme climate events in 2015: exceptionally cold ocean surface temperatures and a summer heat wave ranked in the top ten over the past 65 years. Here, we show that the cold ocean temperatures were the most extreme in the modern record over much of the mid-high latitude North-East Atlantic. Further, by considering surface heat loss, ocean heat content and wind driven upwelling we explain for the firs…
