Regionally optimized fire parameterizations using feed-forward neural networks
The fire weather index (FWI) is a widely used metric for fire danger based on meteorological observations. However, even though it simulates the nonlinear relationship between the meteorological observations and fire intensity, the ability of the FWI to accurately represent global satellite-derived fire intensity observations is limited due to its empirical formulation based on a specific region. In this study, we propose a regionally-fitted fire…
A distinct sub-seasonal modulation in the Atlantic-originated atmospheric teleconnection influence on East Asian monthly climates
The strong sub-seasonal modulation in the atmospheric teleconnection between the North Atlantic and East Asia during boreal winter has been examined. Negative precipitation anomalies and corresponding transient eddy vorticity fluxes over the mid-latitude Atlantic induce a wave packet that leads to cold temperatures over northern China, Korea, and Japan. This relationship is significant for the anomalies averaged from mid-January to mid-February, …
Effects of Pacific Intertropical Convergence Zone precipitation bias on Enso phase transition
In this study, the effect of mean precipitation bias over the Pacific Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) on the El Nino southern oscillation (ENSO) transition is examined using CMIP3 and CMIP5 archives. It is found that the climate models with excessive mean precipitation over the central/eastern Pacific ITCZ tend to simulate slower phase transition of the ENSO. This is because a wetter climatology provides a favorable condition for anomalousl…
Improvement in simulation of Eurasian winter climate variability with a realistic Arctic sea ice condition in an atmospheric GCM
The present study investigates how much a realistic Arctic sea ice condition can contribute to improve simulation of the winter climate variation over the Eurasia region. Model experiments are set up using different sea ice boundary conditions over the past 24 years (i.e., 1988-2011). One is an atmospheric model inter-comparison (AMIP) type of run forced with observed sea-surface temperature (SST), sea ice, and greenhouse gases (referred to as Ex…
Improved simulation of two types of El Niño in CMIP5 models
Using the coupled general circulation models (CGCMs) participating in phases 3 and 5 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP3 and CMIP5), simulations of the two types of El Niño event are evaluated. Previous studies using CMIP3 models pointed out that most of the models tend to simulate a single type of El Niño, and have serious problems in simulating the two types of El Niño independently. On the average, the CGCMs in CMIP5 have sligh…
