It is argued that the interposition of the state between family and child, institutionalized during the Progressive Era, had its roots in an age-segregated welfare policy shaped in the latter half of the nineteenth century. In addition, the way the social control theory has been applied to the history of child welfare reform is questioned. Immigration, Mortality, and Population Growth in Boston, 1840-1880
Mortality rates and trends in Boston Massachusetts are examined for the period 1840 to 1880 using data from two official registers of the city. The author attempts to evaluate the relative impact on mortality of population growth immigration and urban environmental change. Particular attention is paid to the influence of geographical growth and decentralization. (ANNOTATION)
