    Open Access•A D Greene•ARTICLE•Journal of African American Studies•2024•References: 7

The present study examined the intersection of race and attitudes toward crime and criminal justice policies. Using the Kinder Houston Area Survey, findings revealed some surprising similarities, but also significant differences between the three largest racial categories sampled: Black/African American, Hispanic, and White. Political affiliation, social class, and educational attainment were the primary indicators of support/rejection toward att…

  • Whiteness or Resilience? Placing Terror by Studying the Charleston, South Carolina Mother Emanuel Church Shooting

    Kevin Keenan, A D Greene et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Geography•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 9

How do ideas of place support the development of racialized identities in times of terror violence? We situate this paper in the “deep” south via the shooting of 9 black churchgoers by a white supremacist. We explore how the community mobilized after the massacre, and in what ways it relied on ideas of place. While many claimed that the community exemplified resilience, we demonstrate a process of re-racialization. We analyzed local media to docu…

  • Get Up, Get Out, and Git Sumthin

    Open Access•Jason E Shelton, A D Greene•ARTICLE•American Behavioral Scientist•2012•Cited by: 5•References: 23

Does class position influence Blacks' beliefs about the causes of poverty and racial inequality? Prior research has established that Blacks are more structural in orientation than Whites. However, existing studies have not adequately assessed the role that class position plays in shaping intraracial attitudinal differences among Blacks. Both multivariate and trend analyses of nearly four decades of data from the Houston Area Survey indicate that …

  • Communalism, familism, and filial piety

    J Schwartz, R S Weisskirch et al.•ARTICLE•Cultural Diversity & Ethnic…•2010•Cited by: 40•References: 31

The present studies examined the extent to which (a) communalism, familism, and filial piety would pattern onto a single family/relationship primacy construct; (b) this construct would be closely related to indices of collectivism; and (c) this construct would be related to positive psychosocial functioning and psychological distress. In Study 1, 1,773 students from nine colleges and universities around the United States completed measures of com…

  • Whistle-Blowing as a Form of Advocacy

    A D Greene, Jean Kantambu Latting•ARTICLE•Social Work•2004•Cited by: 7•References: 1

Advocacy has been an inherent component of social work since the mid-1800s. The NASW Code of Ethics explicitly promotes advocacy as an ethical stance against inhumane conditions. Whistle-blowing, on the other hand, occurs mostly in the business and public administration disciplines and is relatively unknown in the social work profession. Using facts from composite cases of whistle-blowing incidents, the purpose of this article is to review the so…
