  • Beyond the lockdowns: Satellite observations of aerosol optical depth through 2020, the first year of the Covid-19 pandemic

Open Access•Sarah Smith, Sarah Elise Smith et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2022

Anticipated future reductions in aerosol emissions are expected to accelerate warming and substantially change precipitation characteristics. Therefore, it is vital to identify the existing patterns and possible future pathways of anthropogenic aerosol reductions. The COVID-19 pandemic prompted abrupt, global declines in transportation and industrial activities, providing opportunities to study the aerosol effects of pandemic-driven emissions cha…

  • Stratospheric contribution to the summertime high surface ozone events over the western united states

Open Access•Xinyue Wang, Yutian Wu et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2020

The stratospheric influence on summertime high surface ozone ( O 3 ) events is examined using a twenty-year simulation from the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model. We find that O 3 transported from the stratosphere makes a significant contribution to the surface O 3 variability where background surface O 3 exceeds the 95 th percentile, especially over western U.S. Maximum covariance analysis is applied to O 3 anomalies paired with stratosph…

  • North American cold events following sudden stratospheric warming in the presence of low Barents-Kara Sea sea ice

Open Access•Pengfei Zhang, Yutian Wu et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2020

While the relationship between the Arctic sea ice loss and midlatitude winter climate has been well discussed, especially on the seasonal mean scale, it remains unclear whether the Arctic sea ice condition affects the predictability of North American cold weather on the subseasonal time scale. Here we find that, in the presence of low Barents-Kara Sea (BKS) sea ice, sudden stratospheric warmings (SSWs) can favor surface cold spells over North Ame…
