  • Los saqueos en la historia argentina. Trayectos de una práctica colectiva

Open Access•Sergio Serulnikov, Giuseppina Di Meglio et al.•ARTICLE•Revista Latinoamericana de…•2025

Looting for economic or political motives, with aims of personal gain or ritual destruction, has been a recurrent phenomenon in Argentine history. However, it has received scant historiographical attention compared to other forms of collective action. Its meaning is often opaque to analysis; the distance between protest and individual benefit is not transparent. A clear form of collective violence, its condition as political action is less eviden…

Chuquisaca, 1777-1809

  • University Governance and the Culture of Dissent in Eighteenth-Century Charcas

    Sergio Serulnikov•ARTICLE•Hispanic American Historical Review•2023•References: 2

The article analyzes how the University of Charcas participated in public affairs in Chuquisaca (present-day Sucre) during the late colonial era. I show that following the Jesuit expulsion in the 1760s, the claustro (academic senate) became a center of university life. This body held annual elections to appoint the rector and passed governing rules for the university that allocated academic chairs based on public tenders. The faculty forcefully d…

    Open Access•Sergio Serulnikov•ARTICLE•História da Historiografia…•2020•Cited by: 3•References: 41

  • The Tupac Amaru Rebellion

    Sergio Serulnikov•ARTICLE•Hispanic American Historical Review•2015

The Tupac Amaru movement, strictly understood as the rebellion led by José Gabriel Condorcanqui, who went by the Inca royal name Tupac Amaru, and his relatives in southern Peru between Cuzco and Lake Titicaca from 1780 to 1783, was one of the best-kept secrets in Latin American history. The largest uprising of native peoples against European rule since the conquest era, it is an obligatory reference in any survey of Spanish colonialism, Peruvian …

    Open Access•Sergio Serulnikov•ARTICLE•Nuevo mundo mundos nuevos•2014•Cited by: 1

  • Revolution in the Andes: The Age of Túpac Amaru

Sergio Serulnikov, David Frye•BOOK•Revolution in the Andes•2013

Revolution in the Andes is an in-depth history of the Túpac Amaru insurrection, the largest and most threatening indigenous challenge to Spanish rule in the Andean world after the Conquest. Between 1780 and 1782, insurgent armies were organized throughout the Andean region. Some of the oldest and most populous cities in this region-including Cusco, La Paz, Puno, and Oruro-were besieged, assaulted, or occupied. Huge swaths of the countryside fell …

The collective claims of neighboring patricians and plebeians, the initiatives of the city council, and a serie…

  • The Politics of Intracommunity Land Conflict in the Late Colonial Andes

    Sergio Serulnikov•ARTICLE•Ethnohistory•2008

The article explores the causes, ideological underpinnings, and political repercussions of land battles among the Pocoata, an ethnic group in the southern Andes, during the eighteenth century. These disputes afford us a glimpse into the competing native concepts of land tenure rights; the array of means, legal and extralegal, Andean and Spanish, of solving conflicts between families and ayllus; and the key role of the ethnic chiefs in the struggl…

Focused on Quispicanchis and Canas y Canchis, two provinces of colonial Cuzco that became the core of the Andean insurrection of the early 1780s, this study pursue…
