  • The Therapeutic use of Ritual in Maladaptive Grieving

Open Access•Nancy Reeves, Nancy C Reeves et al.•ARTICLE•OMEGA - Journal of Death and Dying•1990

This article presents a case for the designation of “ritual” as a psychotherapeutic technique for use in maladaptive grieving. Examples are given of the attitudes and utilization of ritual in psychoanalysis, strategic and existential psychotherapies, and pastoral and cross-cultural counseling. The authors suggest how, when, and why ritual can be used to assist individuals to move from a maladaptive to an adaptive style of grieving

  • The Loss-Grief Connection in Susto

    Open Access•Azula A Houghton, Frederic J Boersma•ARTICLE•Ethnology•1988•Cited by: 2

There is currently much debate in anthropology as to whether folk illnesses exist. The controversy centers on whether certain illnesses are culturally specific, influenced by one's ethnicity and acculturation, and whether particular clusters of disturbed behaviors are pathological patterns that can differentiate one culture from another (Kennedy 1977; Rubel 1964; Yap 1977). Exotic syndromes such as susto can fall under the general rubric of a fol…

The Student's Perception of Ability Scale (SPAS) was developed in response to a need for a reliable and valid instrument to measure subject-based academic self-concept in elementary school children. This scale was designed for use with children in grades three to six. Descriptive data on the SPAS were discussed in terms of their substantive, structural, and external validity. Normative data were also highlighted. The scale was found to have six m…

Open Access•David Tjart, Frederic J Boersma•ARTICLE•Journal of Psychology and Theology•1978

Ninety-one Christian and 100 public school eighth graders were given three instruments to assess their religious values. These paper and pencil tests were, respectively, the semantic differential for the terms God and Prayer, Allport's “Intrinsic-Extrinsic” Religious Orientation Scale and Rokeach's “Instrumental Values” scale. Statistically significant differences were observed between the two groups for all three measures. Specifically, Christia…

  • Construct Validity and Further Correlates of the Barron Complexity Scale

    Open Access•R C Conklin, Frederic J Boersma et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1967

Barron's complexity-simplicity personality dimension was used as an indicator of success in two different learning situations. Academic achievers were simple scorers while underachieves were complex scorers. Also, simple scorers were found to retain more items on a paired-associate task than complex scorers. Weaknesses in the Barron Complexity Scale were discussed and a suggestion was made for improving the scale. The scale was shown to have litt…
