First Archaeometrical Approach of the Examinations of Iron Age Ferrous Fragments from Regöly and Bükkábrány (Hungary) – The Inception of Iron Working in the Carpathian Basin
The emergence, spread and development of iron working in the Carpathian Basin is an essential and interdisciplinary research field, an important stage of which being the results of the archaeometallurgical-archaeomaterial examinations presented in this article. The excavation site of Regöly (Hungary) represents a special source from the earliest Iron culture of the Carpathian Basin, and using the results of metallographic analysis our aim is to p…
The archaeometallurgic examination of the bronze plate belt found in tomb 350 of the Tli graveyard of the Koban culture (South Ossetia)
The population of the Koban culture was an actor of outstanding importance in the Caucasus in the late Bronze Age -early Iron Age period ( 2007). The peoples of the mountains lying between the Ancient East and the steppe transmitted and spread the various cultural and technological elements, objects and object types not only towards the neighbouring areas but quite far, for instance, as far as the Carpathian basin, which can be followed from the …
A double burial of the Baden culture from Tatabánya–Delphi (northern Transdanubia, Hungary) – A case study of the Dentalium beads of the Baden culture and their interpretation
Tradecraft of the Avars’ metalworking – manufacturing of iron axes and a special multi-metallic method used for belt accessories
Metallographic analyses were performed on several types of early medieval iron axes (hammers) and on a piece of a belt set, found in Hungary, using optical and SEM-EDS microscopes. The examinations were focusing on defining structural constituents, determining their distribution and grain size. Inclusions were also investigated. On the basis of the result traces and characteristics of different technological methods of forging could have been det…
Complex metallographic study on Gepid bronze and silver buckles from the Great Hungarian Plain (5-6 th cent.)
This work presents a complex metallographic examination of bronze, silver and golden artefacts from early medieval German (Gepid) cemeteries of the Hungarian Plain, focusing on the finds from Tiszapüspöki.A newly developed non-destructive X-ray diffraction method was applied on the artefacts for the first time, as a novel approach, for sampling-free residual stress measurements. Other techniques such as optical microscopy and scanning electron mi…
