From the Womb to the Tomb: Identifying Calving Deaths in Archaeology
Dystocia, or difficult birth, is a major cause of maternal and neonatal mortality in both human and animal populations, yet its archaeological visibility remains remarkably low. This paper explores the diagnostic potential of archaeological deposits of pregnant livestock, particularly cattle, to identify cases of calving‐related mortality. A medieval cattle burial from Téteghem in northern France provides an illustration of a fetal malposition th…
Occurrence, perception and prevention of ovine fasciolosis in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. Fasciolosis, or liver fluke disease, is a parasitic ailment in sheep that has been responsible for significant mortality in flocks, likely since the Neolithic period. However, the earliest unequivocal description of this condition is medieval, with fasciolosis identified in three French-language agricultural treatises from the 13th and 14th cent…
Mesolithic Freshwater Fishing: A Zooarchaeological Case Study
In this article we investigate the importance of freshwater fishing during the Mesolithic in France, in inland sites where fishing was always associated with big game hunting. We present a review of Mesolithic sites that have yielded freshwater fish remains and focus on a case study from an occupation dated to the eighth millennium BC at Les Cabônes rock shelter, located near the Doubs River, that yielded over 9,300 fish remains. Cyprinid (includ…
The grandeur of death - Monuments, societies, and diets in middle Neolithic Paris Basin
Investigating the exploitation pattern of a newly established species, the case of the Late-Glacial roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) at La Fru (Savoie, France)
